Bismarck, N.D. - Junior outside hitter
Lauren Randall had a career night as the University of Mary (6-5, 1-1 NSIC) beat Minnesota State University Moorhead 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-22 and 25-21) Saturday, Sept. 17 at McDowell Activity Center.
Â
The Burnsville, Minn., native finished the Northern Sun Intercolliegte Conference match with a school record 30 kills.
The previous kill record was held by four former Marauder student-athletes.
Alexis Jacobs recorded 24 kills in a match twice in 2015, Amanda Hennessy did it once in 2008 and Tatiani Santos did it once in 2007.
Â
Randall fell two kills short of breaking the NSIC record for kills in a four set match.
Â
Senior outside hitter
Thayna Silva finished the match with 13 kills and 15 digs. Senior setter
Janell Finkbeiner finished with 52 assists and 13 digs for the contest.
Â
Four Marauders finished the match with 10 or more digs (Finkbeiner, Silva,
Geovana Almeida,
Alex Brown and
Elise Baumann).
Â
Mary finished with a team hitting percentage of .225 while the Dragons finished with a .130.
Â
Carly Masloski led the Dragons with 14 kills and teammate Ellie Rutten finished with 11 for the match. Monica Vega added 24 digs.
Â
It was a back-and-forth match in the first set but the Marauders rallied to pull ahead 15-10 and after a
Freddie Campbell kill and an MSUM (6-4, 1-1 NSIC) attack error, Mary was ahead 17-10 and lead the rest of the way to win 25-16.
Â
The second set was similar to the first set early on as the teams traded points until the Dragons pulled ahead 12-10 in the middle of the set. Late in the set MSUM was ahead 24-21 after a Masloski kill but the Marauders scored the next three points to tie the set at 24-24. But a Mary attacking error and a Sarah Hagler kill, the Dragons tied the match up at 1-1.
Â
Mary jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the third set and held their own until MSUM jumped ahead 14-13. The Dragons took a 19-16 lead after a Rutten kill but the Marauders came from behind to take the 23-20 lead and never lost it.
Â
The fourth and final set was another nail bitter set as no team could pull ahead by more than four points. Mary fought hard until the end and a Campbell kill and a Masloski attack error handed the Marauders the match.
Â
Mary hit .348 in the final set and snapped a two-match losing streak. Up next for the Marauders is NSIC opponent Minot State at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the McDowell Activity Center.
