Hammerschmidt hurdles way to pair of wins at Al Cassel Relays

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Luxon Glor spearheaded a dominant effort by the University of Mary men's track & field team in the long jump while a pair of victories by Julia Hammerschmidt highlighted the efforts of the Marauders women's squad at the Al Cassel Relays.

A windy day with cool temperatures, the Marauders competed with a smaller contingent than usual due to commencement at the University of Mary. Despite limited numbers U-Mary produced some top results.

A freshman from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Glor won the long jump with an effort of 23-1.75. Overall the Marauders snared four of the top six slots in the event. Fellow freshman Riley Miller claimed second (22-11.00), senior Dustin Rueb was fourth (21-9.50) and junior Taren Staudinger (21-6.25) tied for sixth.

The Marauders other win of the day was a battle between two freshmen in the high jump. Jack Lamb just edged Sam Mackedanz for the title. The Sedalia, California, native cleared the bar at 6-05.00 to win the event by one inch over his teammate.

U-Mary also dominated the triple jump, claiming spots 2-5. Freshman Tyrell Rosencranz sailed 44-02.50 to place second overall. He had the top mark among attached athletes. Glor finished just an inch behind for third place. Staudinger was fourth at 43-11.75 and Beau Nutting claimed fifth at 43-05.75.

Adam Cebulla posted the top finish for the Marauders in the track events. The junior from Kalispell, Montana, took second in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 58.03 seconds.

Hammerschmidt, a freshman from Hinsrichshagen, Germany, produced the Marauders lone NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark for the day when she cleared the 400 meter hurdles in an impressive time of 1.01.73. She would sweep the hurdles with a win in the 100 also, posting a mark of 14.51 seconds.

The U-Mary women posted two other wins. All-American Tonie-Ann Pandohie breezed to victory in the 200 meter dash. Her time of 24.86 seconds was .55 seconds faster than the runner-up.

Fellow All-American Melanie Rodriguez claimed the 400 meter dash crown. In a time of 58.29 seconds, she edged teammate Chante Spotser (59.84 seconds) for the win.

Josie Guptill took second to Hammerschmidt in the 400 meter hurdles with a clocking of 1:03.26.

The Marauders had a pair of runner-up finishes in the field events. Kaycee Luke cleared the bar at 10-10.00 to take second in the pole vault. Kylie Pastian was second in the long jump with a top mark of 17-09.75. She was fourth in the triple jump.
