KEARNEY, Neb. - At the forefront of the pack, Tate Barnhardt, Rudy Guillen, Paul Michaelson, and Travis Smith all finished with winning records to lead the University of Mary Wrestling team at the Midwest Duals today.
 
The Marauders (5-8, 1-2 NSIC) went 2-2 on the day with dual wins over New Mexico Highlands University and #RV Newman University, while the losses came from the Colorado School of Mines and Chadron State College.
 
First on the slate were the Colorado Mines Orediggers and the dual turned into a back-and-forth affair as every win from Colorado Mines was met with a win from the Marauders.
 
Josh Jensen dropped a 9-6 decision to Zachary Garcia in the 125-pound matchup, but Barnhardt responded with a 9-3 decision over Noah Au-Yeung at 133 pounds. Reed Cronin dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Lukas Erickson at 141 pounds, yet Jakob Weisbrod came right back with a 3-0 decision over Jacob Gerken at 149 pounds.
 
Ethan Ruby pinned Dane Fischer at 1:14 in the 157-pound matchup for the first extra points of the dual, and Paul Michaelson got U-Mary back into the match with a 13-9 decision over Keenan Willits at 165 pounds. Rocky Michaelson, no relation to Paul, took a 6-4 decision over Riley Nagel at 174 pounds, only to be followed Jacob Green take a brilliant sudden victory over Karl Breidenbach at 184 pounds.
 
The deciding match of the dual turned out to be between Paul Wilson and Jonathan Pelach at 197 pounds with the Oredigger scoring a blazingly fast pin only 23 seconds into the bout to put U-Mary on the outside looking in at a 21-12 team score. Smith took a forfeit at the heavyweight matchup but the six points only meant the final score would be at 21-18 in favor of Colorado Mines.
 
U-Mary took on New Mexico Highlands in the second dual of the day and the Marauders got out to a blistering fast start as Jensen, Barnhardt, and Guillen all took extra points in their bouts. Jensen scored a 18-3 tech fall over Jacob Espana, Barnhardt followed that up with a 21-6 tech fall over Tre Humphrey, and Guillen rounded out the start with a 15-4 major decision over Dan Gaylor, putting the team score at 14-0 favoring the Marauders early on.
 
The Cowboys closed right back in on the team score as Reis Humphrey notched a 20-9 major decision over Weisbrod and Kellen Petzel kept the momentum with a 16-7 major decision over Hunter Eckert to put the score at 14-8 going into the 165-pound matchup.
 
Dylan Mitzel got U-Mary back on the winning path as he earned a 13-3 major decision over Juan Alvarado in the bout, but Riley Nagel dropped a 9-1 major decision to Jonathan Bechtloff in the ensuing 174-pound matchup.
 
New Mexico Highlands put the pressure on U-Mary when Luis Terrazas took a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Green at 184 pounds and the Marauders were forced to surrender a forfeit at 197 pounds. Never to back down from the challenge, Smith stepped onto the mat with U-Mary down 21-18 and earned the extra points with a convincing pin of Corbin Grenowich at 1:46 to catapult the Marauders into the win column at 24-21, securing the first win of the day.
 
The lows following the highs appeared to be a theme on the day as U-Mary faced Chadron State in the third dual and the Marauders appeared to have another win on the way as they took three of the first five bouts in the match.
 
Barnhardt scored an 8-6 decision over Taylor Summers, Guillen followed that with a 6-5 decision over Brock Thumm, and Fischer notched a 4-3 decision over Johnny Porter for nine team points for the Marauders. Yet the Eagles weren't out of it as Brandon Kile recorded a 7-5 decision over Jensen and Terrance McKinney tallied a 10-0 major decision over Weisbrod for a 9-7 team score favoring U-Mary midway through.
 
Unfortunately, the tables turned rather quickly as Chadron State rallied off four straight wins, including another forfeit for the Marauders at 197 pounds, with Chance Helmick scoring a 10-1 major decision over Michaelson, Caleb Copeland earning a 12-4 major decision over Nagel, and Shane Rodenbrug taking a 4-2 decision over Green to put the team score at 24-9 and locking up a loss for the Marauders.
 
Smith wouldn't end the dual on a low note, though, as he went to work on Cooper Cogdill and came away with a 12-1 major decision to improve to 3-0 on the day, making the 24-13 team score final for a 1-2 dual record on the day with one remaining.
 
Last on the itinerary was Newman University, a team receiving votes in the most recent national poll, and the Marauders were prepared for a final test on the day. Jensen dropped a 12-3 major decision to Dustin Reed to start the dual, but Barnhardt came right back with an 8-2 decision over Jake Gentzler and was only bested by Guillen who recorded a 17-1 tech fall over Garrett Whitson to put the team score at 8-4 early on.
 
Weisbrod returned to winning form with a 14-2 major decision over Forlanda Parker, yet Fischer couldn't maintain the momentum as he lost to Colton Duhr on the heels of an 11-3 major decision. Michaelson took a forfeit for U-Mary at 165 pounds but the Jets weren't out of the dual just yet as Heath Gray took a 17-3 major decision over Nagel, Kyle Ryan took a 6-3 decision over Mitzel, and Dalton Weidl secured a 10-2 major decision over Green.
 
Fortunately the Marauders took another forfeit at heavyweight as Smith stood unopposed and U-Mary came away with the 24-19 dual win, putting their record at 5-8 on the year, just one win short of their 6-5 mark back in the 2011-12 season.
 
The Marauders will spend next week on the road as they travel to Marshall, Minn., on Saturday, January 23, to resume their conference schedule against Southwest Minnesota State University at 3:00 PM.
