Marauders Falter in Match against Winona State

Box Score WINONA, MINN. - The Marauder's Women's Volleyball team took on Winona State University today in the second match of a three game road trip for U-Mary. It was a rough outing for the Marauders as they lost the match in straight sets against the Warriors.

U-Mary jumped out to an early lead in the first set, going up 3-1 after a few errors from Winona State. The advantage would not last, however, as the Warriors went on a 14-1 run to go up 15-4. Winona State cruised from that point, as they never let the Marauders get closer than nine points en route to a 25-13 victory.

U-Mary fought back in the second set, keeping the score close at 9-8 in favor of the Warriors after three ties and two lead changes. From there, Winona State extended their lead to 16-9 and the Marauders could not find an answer to the Warrior offense as the second set ended with U-Mary on the negative side of 25-14.

The one theme for the year so far is the resilience of this squad as they head into the third set. The Marauders demonstrated that resilience after they battle back from an early 10-4 deficit to narrow the gap to 10-8. Winona State, after a 6-2 run, widened their lead back to six with the score at 16-10. U-Mary chipped away at the lead again to narrow the margin back to two at 17-15. However it made little difference as the Warriors put the Marauders away for good to close out the match 25-20.

Despite the struggle, the Marauders came away with an all around showing as 18 players entered the game for U-Mary. Lauren Boldt led the way with six kills, 19 attacks, five digs, one solo block and one block assist. Freddie Campbell had her first extended action as she finished with four kills, 12 attacks, and three digs.

Janell Finkbeiner directed most of the offense as she registered eight assists, one digs and two block assists. Katelyn Olson had a hand in the offense as well with eight assists, one digs and one block assist.

Alex Brown and Casey Reamann continue to anchor the defense as Brown finished with 12 digs and three assists, while Reamann ended with eight digs.

Allison Adams had a great showing on the net for the Marauders as she led all players in the game with five block assists and added another solo block for her career total.

Head Coach Melissa Chaplin can see the resiliency too, "Our team has growing pains. It's key to get everyone's confidence on at the same time. Tonight our seniors battled and I was proud of their transition coming from behind. I'm still looking for this team to click as one unit."

The Marauders (3-9, 0-3 NSIC) conclude their road trip with a visit to #21 Northern State University on Tuesday, September 23.
