Marauders Lose in Straight Sets to Peacocks

Box Score FAYETTE, IOWA – The Marauders kicked off a three game road trip in a match against Upper Iowa University tonight. It was a tough game for U-Mary as they struggled to fire up their offense en route to a three set sweep from the Peacocks.

The Marauders hiccupped on the offensive end as the Peacocks jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. U-Mary would score the next point to make it 6-2, but that would be the closest they would get. Upper Iowa methodically moved the score in their favor to 11-3, then 19-8, before closing out the first set 25-14

U-Mary responded in kind in the second set as they battled back and forth with the Peacocks early with the score 5-4 in favor of the Marauders. Upper Iowa then went on a 6-1 run to make the score 10-6 before U-Mary battled back to narrow the gap 10-9. The Peacocks rallied off the next five points, however, to extend their lead 15-9. The Marauders continued to fight as they fought back to an 18-14 deficit, but it would not be enough as Upper Iowa closed out the set on a 7-1 run to finalize the score at 25-15.

After some adjustments, the Marauders took to the court in the third set hoping to keep the match alive, but the Peacocks would not slow down.  After Upper Iowa jumped out to a 10-3 in the beginning of the set, the Marauders would utilize every trick in the book to narrow the Peacock's lead at 18-14. It was too little too late, though, as Upper Iowa put U-Mary away at 25-17.

Lauren Randall led the way for the Marauders (3-8, 0-2 NSIC) as she finished the game with 11 kills, 36 attacks, seven digs and one block assist. Katelyn Olson, who tallied 19 assists along with five kills, six attacks and three digs, aided Randall.

Casey Reamann and Alex Brown anchored the defense for U-Mary as Reamann finished with 11 digs and Brown finished with 13.

Head Coach Melissa Chaplin had this to say about the game:

"We played a lot of freshmen tonight who showed promise as they fought for every point and didn't give up. Tomorrow we will focus on staying aggressive and working on moving the ball more evenly on offense."

She went on to mention "Brown and Reamann did a great job for us defensively."

The Marauders will continue their road trip when they travel to Winona, Minn., on Saturday, Sept. 20, to take on the Winona State Warriors.
