FINAL RESULTSWINONA, Minn. – Dominating the track events on the final day of the 2014 Northern Sun Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Mary rolled to a third straight conference title and its sixth in eight years. The Marauders captured seven of the 11 track events and also won the triple jump to win NSIC title by 41.5 points over the runner-up University of Minnesota Duluth.
After missing out on a fourth straight indoor championship by four points earlier this year, NSIC coaches viewed this to be the year U-Mary would also be vulnerable outdoors, picking the Marauders second in the preseason poll. Instead the Marauders emphatically restated their position as the top program in the Northern Sun.
The Marauders accumulated 169.333 points to finish ahead of UMD with 127.833. Augustana was third at 110, followed by Winona State, MSU Moorhead, Minnesota State, Wayne State, Sioux Falls, Northern State, St, Cloud State, Minot State, Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State.
Five-time All-American
Kathryn Stewart headlined the Marauders efforts with an impressive four titles. The junior from Kingston, Jamaica, won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and ran on U-Mary's champion 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
The day started on a high note with the Marauders setting a conference record in the 4x100 meter relay. The team of Stewart,
Janet Johnson,
Brittany Osborne and
Cassandra Jones posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 46.39 in the win.
In third place entering today, U-Mary surged forward in the team standings three events later with the running of the 100 meter hurdles. Johnson, a senior, won the event for the third time in her career with a provisional clocking of 13.79 seconds. It was Johnson's second title of the day. She also placed second in the long jump on Friday. Close behind was
Molly McDonald in fourth place with
Brittney McKinley claiming fifth.
Jones followed with a win in the 400 meter dash. The freshman posted a provisional qualifying mark of 55.62.
U-Mary took over first place for good with a 1-2 finish in the 100 meter dash. Stewart claimed another title with a clocking of 11.99 and Osborne finished second at 12.01. Both were NCAA provisional qualifying times.
Brienna Lynch pulled off the Marauders fourth straight win and fifth on the day. The junior ran a provisional qualifying time of 2:10.82 seconds in the 800 meter run, which also set a Paul Giel Field record.
Kayla Carlson claimed eighth in the event.
Stewart claimed the Marauders next title in the 200 meter dash, her third win of the day. The Kingston, Jamaica, native completed the event in a provo qualifying time of 24.34 seconds. Jones placed fourth in 24.97 seconds.
The Marauders capped their track dominance with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay, the final race of the day. The quartet of Hovland, Guptill, Stewart and Jones posted a provisional qualifying time of 3:48.76 to cap off the team championship three-peat.
One final victory for the Marauders came in the final field event. McKinley captured the triple jump with a leap of 39' 8". Her provisional qualifying distance was 10.5" longer than the second place effort. Joining McKinley on the awards stand was
Danylle Kurywchak and
Faith Kjelstrup. Kurywchak was third in a distance of 37' 9.5" and Kjelstrup was seventh at 36' 3".
Two Marauders placed in the 400 meter hurdles.
Josie Guptill claimed third in a time of 1:01.50 and
Crystal Hovland was right behind in fourth at 1:01.70. Both were provisional qualifying times.
Megan Beam posted her second provisional qualifying time of the weekend when she covered the 5,000 meter run in 17:17.12 to place fourth.
Kennedy Robbins placed fifth in the 3,000 meter steeple chase, posting a time of 11:19.88.
In the javelin, sophomore Danielle Clark claimed seventh with a throw of 117' 4".
U-Mary landed three of the top seven individual point scorers. Stewart was third with 25 points, Johnson finished sixth with 20.5 points and Jones finished seventh with 20 points.
The Marauders previous titles came in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013.
