Dominating DMR Performance Wins NCAA Championship, Jennifer Agnew All-American in 5,000

DMR Posts 3rd Fastest Time in NCAA Division II History

Birmingham, AL – A dominating performance in the Distance Medley Relay captured the University of Mary's first championship of the Marauders NCAA era and Jennifer Agnew earned All-American honors on the first full day of the 2013 NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The U-Mary quartet of Dakota Wolf, Kathryn Stewart, Brienna Lynch and Melissa Agnew combined to run the third fastest time in NCAA Division II history to set a new school record, earning all four All-American honors. The top-ranked unit entering the championships, U-Mary ran a blistering time of 11:28.92. Cal State Stanislaus was second in 11:31.76.

Wolf got the Marauders off to a tremendous start but it was an impressive closing kick by Melissa Agnew that sealed the win. With the possibility of being penned in by the second place runner and the runners from teams about to be lapped, the senior All-American added an extra kick to create distance and maneuvered to the outside to pass the trailing runners as U-Mary won the DMR by nearly three seconds.

Both Stewart and Agnew posted the top times on their legs of the relay and Wolf was second by .42 seconds.

Jennifer Agnew earned her third All-American citation with a fifth place finish in the 5,000 meter run. The senior from Onamia, MN, set a school record by 13 seconds when she posted a mark of 16:45.71. She has a chance for another top eight finish on Saturday when she runs in the 3,000.

In addition to her efforts in the DMR, Melissa Agnew qualified for the finals in the mile run. She ran a 4:51.34 to place second in the preliminaries.

Stewart set the third U-Mary school record of the day in the 200 meter dash but her effort wasn't enough to qualify her for the finals. The sophomore ran a 24.45 but she finished 16th in the preliminaries.

Melissa Walker finished 11th in the long jump with a top mark of 18-10.5. The junior All-American from Kingston, Jamaica was ranked 18th entering the weekend.

Janet Johnson was clocked at 8.76 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles. She placed 15th in the preliminaries#and didn't qualify for the finals.

After the first full day of competition with just six of 17 events scored, the Marauders are fourth in the team standings with 14 points.

Four Marauders will compete on Saturday, March 9, the final day of competition. In addition to Jennifer Agnew in the 5,000 and Melissa Agnew in the mile, Walker participates in the triple jump and Wolf will race in the 5,000 meter run.
