Second Half Letdown Negates Turner Shooting Clinic

Box Score Sioux Falls, SD – For the second straight night the University of Mary was unable to protect a halftime lead, negating another outstanding performance by Josh Turner. The Marauders senior guard scored 28 points but U-Mary suffered a 75-70 road loss to the University of Sioux Falls.

Coming off a game in which he scored 30 points and made 8-of-10 three point attempts against Southwest Minnesota State University, Turner continued to display an incredible shooting touch.

Turner reached 28 points for the second time this season, raining down seven treys in 11 attempts behind the arc. He was perfect in five attempts at the free throw line and added two assists. On the weekend the Aurora, CO, native went 15-of-21 on three point attempts.

U-Mary (3-19 overall, 2-16 Northern Sun) was forced to overcome a slow start as Sioux Falls (10-12, 6-12) jumped out to a 16-7 lead. Behind three Turner treys, the Marauders went on a 21-3 run to grab a 28-19 advantage. Turner drained a fourth three ball in the first half inside the final minute of play and U-Mary entered intermission leading 31-22.

The Marauders eventually pushed their advantage to double digits on a Brandon Tyler trey for a 40-30 lead with 14:57 remaining. Sioux Falls then turned the game over to Derek Brown.

Brown spearheaded a 19-6 Cougars run, hitting three treys and scoring 12 points to twice give USF the lead. The second lead change was on a three ball at the 8:50 mark, giving USF a 49-46 lead the Cougars would never relinquish.

Soon down by 12, Turner willed the Marauders back into the game. In the final minute he hit three treys, converted a three-point play, a four-point play, and was fouled behind the arc and made three free throws to drag the Marauders within 72-70 and 30 seconds showing on the clock.

The U-Mary rally was extinguished when AJ Holland made two free throws with 23 seconds left to create a four-point differential.

Marc Musungayi added 16 points for U-Mary, making 8-of-14 shots from the floor. He also had four rebounds. Jalen Jaspers added nine rebounds and six points.

Brown paced USF with 21 points, making 6-of-9 three pointers. David Maxwell scored 14 points and Holland chipped in 12.

The Marauders return home looking to break their 13 game losing streak when they host the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday, February 15.
