TODAY: A whole new season starts today for the University of Mary men's basketball team as the Marauders open post season play at #21 Winona State University. The seventh seed in the Northern Sun North Division, the Marauders will play the NSIC South second-seeded Warriors in the opening round of the NSIC / Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament. Game time is set for 8 PM on Wednesday, February 27, at McCown Gymnasium.
AT STAKE: The Marauders-Warriors victor will advance to the second round of the NSIC tournament and will face the winner of the Bemidji State University - Wayne State College tussle. Round two is set for the site of the higher seed on Saturday, March 2. The semifinal round and the championship game will be played at Taylor Arena in Rochester, MN, on March 8-9.
ADJUST YOUR RADIO: The U-Mary men's playoff game at Winona State will air on a different station than usual. Fans can listen to the Marauders-Warriors game on KBMR Country 1130 AM and online at www.kbmr.com. Brian Larson will have the call. The U-Mary women's playoff game against Upper Iowa will air on ESPN 710 AM (www.espn710am.com) with Rick Anthony, Voice of the Marauders, calling the game. The women's pregame is set for 6:30 PM with tipoff at 7 PM at the McDowell Activity Center.
THE RECORDS: The Marauders are 4-22 overall and 3-19 in the NSIC, 7th in the NSIC North Division and 15th overall in the conference standings... The Warriors are 23-6 and 17-5 in the NSIC (2nd in the NSIC South and 2nd overall).
LAST WEEK: The Marauders lost two road games on the last weekend of the regular season, falling 92-77 at MSU Moorhead and 79-64 at Northern State... Playing on the road, the Warriors defeated Wayne State College 73-64 bfore getting tripped up in the regular season finale, losing 81-78 in overtime at Augustana. The loss cost the Warriors at least a share of the NSIC and NSIC South crowns.
RECENT HISTORY / LAST MEETING:
U-Mary vs. Winona State: U-Mary is 1-12 all-time against Winona State University. The Warriors won the first seven games of the series. The Marauders lone win was an 87-85 overtime win at home Jan. 3, 2010, as Anthony Moody scored 29 points and hit 5-of-6 treys on his way to winning NSIC Player of the Week honors. WSU twice has defeated U-Mary in the NSIC tournament and are 7-0 at home against the Marauders.
Last Meeting vs. WSU: U-Mary struggled offensively against Winona State in a 64-47 home loss on January 11, 2013, in the only meeting of the year between the two squads. The Warriors held the Marauders to 28 per cent shooting and blocked 12 shots. U-Mary used a flurry of three-pointers to make a run in the second half, pulling within 37-35 with 15 minutes remaining. The Warriors would respond with a 19-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Marc Musungayi led U-Mary with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Alex Dorr paired 11 points and eight rebounds. Clayton Vette led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds for WSU. Calen Palkert, Xavier Humphrey and Zander Culver all chipped in 11 points each.
SCOUTING REPORT
Winona State: Ranked atop the first NCAA Central Region poll of the season a week ago, the Warriors are ranked 21st in the nation as they enter post season play. However, an overtime loss to Augustana in the season finale cost the Warriors a share of the Northern Sun title and could knock them down in the regional poll. F/C Clayton Vette is one of the elite players in the NSIC, averaging 20.8 points and 8.1 rebounds. Xavier Humphrey averages 11.4 points and Grant Johnson, who missed much of the season due to eligibility issues, contributes 10.9 points per game. Tall and athletic, teams are shooting just 40.1 per cent against the Warriors.
LAST TIME OUT: Despite a strong weekend by
Jalen Jaspers, the Marauders closed out the season with consecutive road losses. Jaspers scored 21 in a 92-77 loss at MSU Moorhead.
Josh Turner added 18 and
Kevin Jensen just missed a double double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Tucker led all players with 23 points and 10 assists. Jaspers followed up with 23 points in a 77-64 loss at Northern State to set a career-high. Marc Musingayi led all players with 27 points, also his career high. Dustin Tetzlaff led the Wolves with 18 points.

CAREER WEEKEND:
Jalen Jaspers (G, 6-3, 200, Jr., Minneapolis, MN / De La Salle HS) had a career weekend to close out the 2012-13 regular season. The junior guard set personal scoring highs back to back nights. Jaspers scored 21 points at MSU Moorhead on Friday, making 9-of-14 shots from the floor. He also had six assists and four rebounds. The Minneapolis native followed up with a 23 point outing at Northern State. He made three treys in four attempts and 10-of-17 shots overall, adding four rebounds and two assists. His previous high was 19 points. For the weekend Jaspers averaged 22 points, four rebounds and four assists per game while shooting 61.3 per cent
MUSUNGAYI MOMENTUM: Junior F
Marc Musungayi scored a career-high 27 points in the Marauders season finale at Northern State. He nailed 13-of-18 shots from the floor and was 1-of-2 at the line. He also had five rebounds. The Toronto native's previous high was 25 points. On the year he is averaging 10.7 points and is fifth in the NSIC in field goal percentage (57.5), 10th in blocks (.96) and 15th in rebounding (5.6/game).

Jalen Jaspers combined to score 50 of the Marauders 64 points at Northern State in the season finale. Musungayi scored 27 points and Jaspers 23 as both established new career highs. The pair were a combined 23-of-35 from the floor. The rest of the squad went 6-of-33.
DOWNTOWN: The Marauders are tops in the Northern Sun in three point shooting. U-Mary leads the NSIC in threes made / game with 8.5. As a team the Marauders are shooting 37.8 per cent from behind the arc, 5th in the NSIC.
TURN(ER) UP THE HEAT: During a recent five game stretch,
Josh Turner connected on 30-of-46 three point attempts. That run has pushed Turner to 16th in the nation in three point shooting percentage (43.2). The senior guard is 70-for-162 on treys this season.
HOT SHOT: Over a recent six game period,
Josh Turner averaged 21.5 points and 5.7 three pointers per game while shooting 57 per cent (34-for-60) behind the arc. Four times in six contests he scored 20 or more points, including a career-high 30 at Southwest Minnesota State. He slowed slightly last weekend, scoring 18 at MSU Moorhead before being held scoreless at Northern State.
TURNER'S TOP HITS: One of the nation's top three-point shooters,
Josh Turner is second in the NSIC and leads the Northern Sun and is ranks 28th in the NCAA in three-pointers made per game with 2.84. He is 31st in the NCAA in three point shooting percentage (41.6).
ONE LAST HURRAH: Senior forward
Alex Dorr made one last start on Senior Day against Bemidji State. A broken finger ended Dorr's season after the St. Cloud State game on 1.26.13. The Marauders sent Dorr out for the tip and pulled him after the first whistle, allowing Marauders fans the opportunity to salute the Norwalk, IA, native one last time as he left the court.
RECORD PERFORMANCE:
Josh Turner set a school mark for 3-point shooting percentage when he drained 8-of-10 three pointers at Southwest Minnesota State on February 8, 2013. His 80 per cent mark exceeded the 75 per cent effort by Geoff West (9-of-12 at Saint Martin's University on 11.19.2008) and Jordan Wilhelm (6-of-8 at MSU Billings 11.16.2010).
BROKEN DORR: A broken finger has cost U-Mary senior forward
Alex Dorr the final eight games of his senior season. The Marauders leading scorer and rebounder most of the season, Dorr ranks among the leading players in the Northern Sun this season. Here is where he ranks in several categories: Rebounding: Averaging 7.9 rebounds per game, Dorr is second in the NSIC and 79th in the NCAA
Scoring: Dorr is 20th in the NSIC in scoring at 12.8 points per game.
Double Doubles: Dorr is 86th in the NCAA with five.
Free throw shooting: Dorr is second in the NSIC, making 91.3 per cent (41-of-46). He was ranked in the NCAA most of the year but no longer has enough attempts.
Three-pointers made per game: At. 1.89 made treys per game, Dorr is 10th in the NSIC and 235th in the NCAA.
Three-point shooting percentage: Dorr is 9th in the NSIC in three point shooting at 42.4 per cent.
OPEN DORR POLICY: Marauders senior forward
Alex Dorr made a big jump in his production this season. He averaged 13.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game after generating 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds as a junior. Always tremendous at the line, Dorr has improved from 78 per cent to 91.3 per cent this season. After recording one double double in his first two seasons Dorr has five this year alone.

Alex Dorr crossed the 500 point barrier at St. Cloud State on January 4, 2013 and surged past 600 at home against St. Cloud State on 1.26.13. Dorr now has 602 career points at U-Mary in 72 games. He is just the eighth Marauder to post 600 points since U-Mary began NCAA and NSIC competition in 2006-07.
CAREER REBOUNDS: With 402 rebounds in three seasons,
Alex Dorr is 18th on the U-Mary all-time chart.

Josh Turner is just the ninth U-Mary player to crack 600 career points since the Marauders started NCAA and NSIC play in the 2006-07 season, reaching that level against Augustana. The Marauders senior guard in his second season at U-Mary now has 664 points.

Jalen Jaspers scored his 500th career point against Minnesota State on February 1. The junior forward becomes just the 11th U-Mary player to cross that barrier since beginning NCAA play in 2006-07. He is currently sitting at 592 points.
