Mankato, MN – The domination by the University of Mary women's track and field program continued as the Marauders captured a third straight Northern Sun Indoor Championship and fifth in seven years. The Marauders won the first five individual track events of the day and eight of nine overall.
Melissa Agnew set two NSIC records and
Kathryn Stewart also won two individual titles for the Marauders.
U-Mary compiled 185 team points to easily outdistance runner-up Winona State University with 130. The Marauders would finish with nine individual champions and one winning relay squad at the championships.
Over the two days the Marauders would set six Northern Sun records (3,000 meter run by
Jennifer Agnew, Distance Medley Relay, one mile and 1,000 meter run by
Melissa Agnew 60 meter hurdles by
Janet Johnson and 200 meter dash by
Kathryn Stewart) and four U-Mary school records (3,000 and 5,000 by
Jennifer Agnew, 1,000 by
Melissa Agnew and 60 meter hurdles by
Janet Johnson).
Sitting in fourth place and trailing by 24 points after the opening day, U-Mary blew past the opposition by winning eight of the 12 final events on Saturday and claiming second in three others.
A nine time All-American, Agnew opened the day with a record setting performance in the one mile run, setting a Northern Sun mark with a provisional national qualifying time of 4:53.96.
A short time later Agnew returned to break her own conference mark in the 1,000 meter run. The senior cruised to a time of 2:51.43 in the event to also set a U-Mary record.
Stewart breezed to wins in the 400 meter run and the 200 meter dash, posting provisional qualifying times in both. The All-American opened with a mark of 56.29 in the 400 and returned later to run the 200 in 24.56. Her time in the 200 set a new NSIC record.
Janet Johnson earned a title with a Northern Sun and a U-Mary school record in the 60 meter hurdles. The All-American blew past the field with a provisional qualifying mark of 8.58 seconds. Two other Marauders also placed in the event.
Brittney McKinley, who placed in three different events on Saturday, claimed the 60 meter dash title. The junior from Los Angeles, CA, won the 60 in 7.78 seconds, a provisional qualifying time. She also was third in the 60 meter hurdles with a provisional qualifying mark of 8.75 seconds and was sixth in the triple jump.
Megan Jenkins led a quartet of Marauders to place in the 600 meter run. A senior from Kuna, ID, she posted a time of 1:35.23 to narrowly edge Minnesota State's Rheindie Richemond's clocking of 1:35.29 for first.
Kayla Schuh snared sixth for the Marauders with a time of 1:38.81, followed by
Josie Guptill (1:39.19) and
Crystal Hovland (1:39.54).
Capping the individual performances was
Jennifer Agnew, who won the 5,000 meter run in a time of 16:58.49. It was the second win for
Jennifer Agnew, who set a conference and U-Mary record Friday in the 3,000 meter run.
Twin sisters from Onamia, MN, Jennifer and
Melissa Agnew combined for four individual conference titles, three Northern Sun records and three U-Mary school records for the Marauders.
The lone individual track event U-Mary didn't win was the 800 meter run, where
Brienna Lynch was edged by .14 seconds. Lynch ran a 2:14.56 to claim second in the event.
U-Mary closed the day with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. Hovland,
Kaitlyn Wurnig, Lynch and Jenkins posted a provisional time of 3:53.85 and were edged out of first by .55 seconds.
The Marauders also finished second in the triple jump. All-American
Melissa Walker sailed a provisional qualifying distance of 39-4.00, her best effort of the year, to take runner up honors. Walker also was third in the long jump on Friday and eighth in the 60 meter hurdles to join McKinley in placing in three events.
Three more Marauders also placed in the triple jump.
Danylle Kurywchak took fourth (38-4.00) with a provisional qualifying effort, McKinley was sixth (37-4.00) and
Allison Opp placed eighth (36-11.75).
A superior Saturday for U-Mary started in the mile. In addition to the win by
Melissa Agnew, All-American
Dakota Wolf placed second with a provisional time of 4:58.06. The defending NSIC Indoor Athlete of the Year, Wolf led the Marauders to an NSIC record-setting Distance Medley Relay effort and third in the 3,000 meter run on Friday.
Alecia Nehl placed fourth in the mile at 5:04.43 and
Erin Leier (5:06.41) claimed sixth.
Kayla Carlson, who ran on the Marauders winning DMR team, also earned All-NSIC honors by taking second to
Melissa Agnew in the 1,000 meter run (2:57.59).
Freshman
Mykala Benjamin claimed sixth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.92 seconds.
Under the direction of Head Coach
Mike Thorson, the Marauders now have won NSIC indoor titles in five of the seven seasons U-Mary has competed in the Northern Sun; 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
