Musungayi, Jaspers Combine for 50 in Loss to Wolves, UM to Open NSIC Tourney at #18 Winona State

Aberdeen, SD – Marc Musungayi and Jalen Jaspers combined to score 50 points for the University of Mary but their supporting cast scored 14 in a 79-64 Marauders loss at Northern State University in the regular season finale.
 
U-Mary will open the Northern Sun/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament at #18 Winona State University on Wednesday, February 27. Game time is 8 PM. The Marauders are the seventh seed in the NSIC North and the Warriors are the second seed in the NSIC South.
 
Musungayi was dominant in the second half when he scored 23 of his career-high 27 points. The junior forward connected on 13-of-18 shots from the floor and made one of two free throw attempts. Musungayi also had five rebounds in the game. His previous scoring high was 25 points.
 
For the second straight night Jaspers reached a career high in points. The junior guard scored 23 points with 15 coming before intermission. Jaspers made 10-of-17 field goal attempts, including an impressive 3-of-4 effort behind the arc. He added four rebounds and two assists. Jaspers scored 21 points on Friday at MSU Moorhead in what had been a previous scoring best.
 
The remaining Marauders combined to score 14 points while making 6-of-33 shot attempts. One of the hottest players in the NSIC and one of the nation's three-point shooters, Josh Turner was held scoreless and finished 0-for-10 on field goal attempts. He did have four assists.
 
Brandon Tyler came off the bench to make two treys, score eight points and corral six rebounds.
 
Dustin Tetzlaff led Northern State with 18 points. Collin Pryor added 15 points and eight rebounds. Jared Hannigan and Geoffrey Firmin both had 11 points.
 
Despite committing 12 turnovers to 10 for U-Mary, Northern State held a 21-11 edge in points off turnovers. The Wolves held a big edge at the free throw line, connecting on 19-of-25 attempts to a 1-for-4 effort for the Marauders. NSU also held an edge in shooting, making 50 per cent of its field goal attempts to 42 per cent for U-Mary.
 
The Wolves never trailed in the game. Behind consecutive treys by Michael Emge the Wolves built their first double digit lead and entered intermission leading 40-26. Eventually the Wolves lead would grow to 28 points before a late Marauders run brought the final margin down to a more respectable figure.
 
The Marauders are 4-22 overall and 3-19 in the Northern Sun. The Wolves improve to 19-10 and 14-8 to claim the second seed in the NSIC North and the opportunity to host two NSIC playoff games.
