Box Score Duluth, MN – Despite 18 points from
Devan Douglas, a slow start in the second half doomed the University of Mary men's basketball team in a 72-65 loss at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Leading by two at the break, the Bulldogs scored the first ten points after intermission to keep the Marauders winless in Northern Sun play.
Douglas reached double digits for the fifth straight game. Making his second consecutive start, the junior guard connected on 9-of-14 shots from the field and he grabbed six rebounds.
Damonta Henry and
Chris Mason also reached double figures in points. Henry hit two treys and snatched a team-high seven rebounds. Mason chipped in ten points and also has scored at least ten points in each of his last five games.
One of four Bulldogs in double figures, Jordan Reetz led all players with 22 points. Peter Crawford scored 17 points, Reece Zoelle added 11 points and seven rebounds and Junior Coleman chipped in ten.
A close game at intermission, the largest lead was six points before the Bulldogs entered halftime leading 36-34. Behind eight points from Reetz during UMD's 10-0 run to open the second half, the Bulldogs opened a lead the Marauders would never breech. UMD led by as many as 16 points at one point while the closest U-Mary came was the seven point differential at the end of the game.
While U-Mary (2-7 overall / 0-4 NSIC) would win the battle from the floor, UMD (3-5 / 1-3) claimed the war at the free throw line. The Marauders shot 47.3 per cent from the floor to just 40.3 per cent for the Bulldogs. At the line, though, UMD was 18-of-20 while U-Mary made 8-of-16.
The Marauders finish the weekend with a conference road double-header at St. Cloud State University.
