Career Nights For Several Marauders Lead U-Mary to First Conference Win

U-Mary dropped the first set before going on to win in five

Box Score Bemidji, MN—In search of its first conference win of the season, the University of Mary (4-13, 1-9 NSIC) delivered by defeating Bemidji State University (5-13, 1-9) on the road in Northern Sun action Friday night. U-Mary dropped the first set 25-21, but rallied to win the second 25-16 as it went on to win in five sets (21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-13, 15-11).
 
Bismarck native Alexis Jacobs tied her career-high with 19 kills and set a new career-high with 19 digs for her third double-double of the season. Freshman Janell Finkbeiner set new career-highs with 52 assists and 18 digs. Middleblocker Allison Adams also had a career night finishing with a career-best 18 kills while hitting .342.
 
Jessica Yost was the Beavers top all-around performer leading the team with 15 kills while adding 12 digs and four block assists.
 
U-Mary started the match slowly dropping the first set 25-21. Trailing 14-12, the Marauders surrendered a 4-0 run that gave the Beavers control of the set. U-Mary had its poorest hitting performance of the night in the first hitting just .156.
 
In the second U-Mary came out strong jumping to an 11-4 lead. The Marauders added to the lead as they went on to win 25-16. In one of their best hitting performances of the season, U-Mary outhit the BSU .333 to .029.
 
Despite a strong effort in the third, the Marauders found themselves trailing two sets to one heading the fourth. In a must-win situation, U-Mary responded with a dominant performance holding BSU to a -.027 hitting percentage as they cruised to a 25-13 win.
 
In the final set the Marauders took a 1-0 lead on a block by Jacobs and Paige Smith, one of Smith's five on the night, and never trailed en route to a 15-11 decision as they won the match in five sets.
 
For the match four different U-Mary players had 10 or more kills, three of which hit over.300. The Marauders outhit the Beavers in three of the five sets, and held a .228 to .134 edge on the night
 
Defensively five different players finished with 10 or more digs for U-Mary including Alex Brown, who had a team-high 22, as the Marauders finished with a season-best 92. The blocking attack was also impressive finishing with a season-best 12 total blocks led by Adams who finished with six block assists.
 
U-Mary will be back in action on Saturday as they take on University of Minnesota Crookston at 4 p.m.
