Marc Musungayi exploded for four dunks and 20 points but an early deficit proved too much for the University of Mary to overcome in a 64-55 loss to the University of Minnesota Duluth.
After playing seven of their last nine games on the road, the Marauders (3-14 overall, 2-11 NSIC) tipped off a four game home stand against the Bulldogs (5-12, 3-10). U-Mary showed too much hospitality early in the game and trailed by as many as 11 points in the opening half.
Mike Johnson knocked down a three-pointer just before intermission and the Marauders entered intermission down 32-24.
Consecutive dunks by Musungayi off feeds from
Alex Dorr and a three-point play by Dorr rallied the Marauders to within 41-39. Immediately UMD responded as Jake Hottenstine converted a three-point play of his own and Peter Crawford drained a three-pointer to push the Bulldogs lead up to eight.
Brandon Tyler scored five points in a 7-1 run to again get the Marauders back within two at 48-46 but U-Mary could never completely close the gap. Eventually the Bulldogs pushed their advantage to as many as 11 points and held on to sweep the season series with the Marauders.
The Bulldogs never trailed in the game and the only tie was at 11-11.
Musungayi was a powerful force in the blocks for the Marauders, connecting on 9-of-12 shots. He added six rebounds and posted two blocks.
Johnson added 10 points for U-Mary, hitting two treys and distributing six assists. Tyler hit two treys and scored eight points.
Josh Turner added seven points and three assists and Dorr contributed six points, six rebounds and five assists.
Hottenstine scored 21 points for UMD, keyed by a 7-of-9 effort at the line. Brett Ervin added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Crawford scored 13 and had eight boards.
The Marauders shot 45.1 per cent from the field to 44 per cent for the Bulldogs. UMD won the game at the line, making 15-of-24 free throws to U-Mary's 3-of-7 effort.
Looking to snap an eight game losing streak, U-Mary concludes the home weekend against NSIC North Division leading St. Cloud State University on Saturday, January 26, at 6 PM.
