Three Road Games in Five Days for the Marauders Starts Tonight at Minot Sate

THIS WEEK: With three road games in five days, this is the busiest week of the season for the University of Mary. The Marauders first must face their travel partner, the Minot State University Beavers, on Tuesday, January 15. Tip off is set for 8 PM at the Minot State Dome. U-Mary then heads south to face Augustana and Wayne State College. The Marauders play the Vikings at 8 PM on Friday, January 18, at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, SD. The three-game swing concludes in Wayne, NE, when the Marauders tangle with the Wildcats at 6 PM on Saturday, January 19, in Rice Auditorium.

THE RECORDS: The Marauders are 3-10 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC, tied for 6th in the NSIC North Division and 12th overall in the conference standings... The Beavers are 4-9 overall and 3-6 in the NSIC (5th in the NSIC North and 11th overall)... The Vikings are 10-3 and 6-3 (4th in the NSIC South, 6th overall in the NSIC)... The Wildcats are 10-5 and 4-5 (6th in the South, 10th overall).

LAST WEEK: The Marauders lost two conference home games, 64-47 to Winona State University and 67-63 to Upper Iowa... Minot State lost two home games, losing 84-56 to Upper Iowa and 84-55 to Winona State... Augustana split two road games, losing 69-67 at Bemidji State before defeating Minnesota Crookston 70-64... Wayne State claimed two road wins, defeating Minnesota Crookston 66-41 and Bemidji State 64-62.

RECENT HISTORY / LAST MEETING:
U-Mary vs. Minot State: Former rivals in the North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC) and the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10), the Marauders and Beavers renewed their conference affiliation and rivalry with Minot State's move to the Northern Sun (NSIC) this season. The Marauders snapped a five-game losing streak to the Beavers with a 77-65 win to open NSIC play on December 1. The Marauders have lost three straight games in Minot, last winning in the Magic City on February 25, 2004, an 87-82 DAC-10 playoff win. Barton led the Marauders with 16 points and Cadwallder had nine rebounds.

Last Meeting vs. MSU: In the first Northern Sun meeting between instate foes U-Mary and Minot State University, the Marauders rode a career-high scoring effort by Alex Dorr, tremendous long-range shooting and exceptional work at the free throw line to a 77-65 win in a game played at the Bismarck Civic Center. The win snapped a 5-game losing streak to the Beavers. Dorr scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebound, hitting 4-of-8 behind the arc. U-Mary made 25 free throws in 31 attempts, including a 17-of-19 effort in the second half. Josh Turner drained 4-of-6 three point attempts and scored 17 points for U-Mary, Jalen Jaspers had 12 points and a team-high five assists, and Mike Johnson added 10 points, four assists and three steals. Off the bench, Noah Stewart scored all of his 11 points at the free throw line and had five rebounds and four assists. Chris East scored 15 and grabbed eight rebounds in a reserve roll to pace the Beavers in both categories. Thomas Korf added 12 points and Kelvin Fraser had 10 for MSU.

U-Mary vs. Augustana: U-Mary is 5-7 against Augustana in a series that started in 1999-2000 with an 89-64 Vikings win. The first Marauders win was a 68-64 victory on 1.18.2006. Augustana won both games last season. U-Mary's last win was a 90-81 victory on February 11, 2011. The Marauders last win in Sioux Falls, SD, was a 63-49 win on December 4, 2012.

Last Meeting: Shooting a combined 14-of-19 from the field, Damon Smith scored 21 points and Alex Dorr added 15 for the Marauders but U-Mary couldn't keep pace with Augustana in an 89-66 road loss on February 11, 2012. U-Mary shot 46.4 per cent as a team but Augie checked in a 56 per cent. Cameron McCaffrey led the Vikings with 22 points. Drae Murray added 18 and Cody Schilling 16.

U-Mary vs. Wayne State: The Wildcats hold a 9-4 series lead over the Marauders. The two teams first met during the 2005-06 season with the Marauders claiming a 70-65 win. Wayne State followed with six straight wins over U-Mary before the Marauders broke the streak with a 73-62 win at WSC on Dec. 5, 2009.

Last Meeting: Darius Robinson hit the go-ahead shot with 1:52 remaining in the game and the University of Mary held off multiple Wayne State College attempts to regain the lead in the Marauders 61-60 road win over the Wildcats. U-Mary's Damon Smith posted game-highs with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Smith also hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to give U-Mary a three point lead. Lamada Williams scored 17 points for U-Mary and Robinson added 11. Ryan Rolfzen scored 18 points for the Wildcats, making 6-of-8 trey attempts. Amry Shelby and Williams both had 14 points.

SCOUTING REPORT
Minot State University is in its first season as a member of the Northern Sun and has experienced some solid success. Currently 4-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play, the Beavers captured 3-of-4 games - all on the road - before suffering a sweep at home by two teams tied for second in the NSIC. EJ Williams is the lone Beavers player in double figures, averaging 11.1 points/game. Dominique McDonald checks in at 8.8 points/game and leads the team in steals (15). Chris East is controlling the boards (7.8 rebounds/game) and chips in 6.1 PPG. Thomas Korf has 21 treys for MSU and Kelvin Fraser is one of the top shot blockers in the nation (1.9/game).

Augustana remains one of the top teams in the Northern Sun under head coach Tom Billiter, despite starting three freshmen a game. Augie has six straight winning seasons and has qualified for the NCAA playoffs in four of the last five seasons. SR G Cameron McCaffrey is one of the leading scorers in the league, averaging 19.8 PPG. He has scored over 1,500 points in his career. 6-9 FR F Daniel Jensen is averaging 9.0 PPG and 4.7 RPG. FR G Casey Schilling leads the Vikings with 4.8 RPG. One of the top defensive teams in the NSIC, Augie allows 62.5 PPG. They are third in the league in rebounding margin at +5.5 and won 9-of-10 games when winning the board battle.

Wayne State College is on a roll, winning 5-of-6 games and improving to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 at home. The Wildcats are led by All-NSIC guard Amry Shelby, who averages 14.9 PPG. Two other players also average double figures, SR F Derrell Williams (10.9 PPG) and JR G LaTroy Wright (10.3 PPG). The Wildcats feature the top scoring defense in the NSIC, allowing just 60.9 PPG while scoring 67.7 PPG. However, WSC is last in rebounding margin at -3.1.

LAST TIME OUT: The Marauders suffered two tough home losses last weekend as U-Mary faced two teams tied for second in the NSIC. On Friday U-Mary dropped a 64-47 decision to Winona State. The Marauders pulled within two points with 15 minutes remaining but the Warriors went on a 19-2 run to pull away. Marc Musungayi led U-Mary with 15 points and Alex Dorr added 11. All-American Clayton Vette scored 23 points and had nine rebounds and four blocks to lead Winona State... Upper Iowa edged the Marauders 67-63 on Saturday on a game televised throughout central and western North Dakota. Trailing much of the game U-Mary closed within 65-63 with 10 seconds left when Sam Elgin missed the front end of the bonus. U-Mary grabbed the rebound but Elgin stole the ball and scored on a layup with five seconds remaining to seal the Peacocks win. Five Marauders scored in double figures, led by Jalen Jaspers with 13. Musungayi and Josh Turner both had 12 points and Dorr and Brandon Tyler added 11 apiece. Tucker Wentzien led the Peacocks with 16 points, eight boards and four blocks.

MIDPOINT: The Marauders are halfway through the 2012-13 schedule. U-Mary has played 13 regular season games and has 13 more to go.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Marauders continue their toughest part of the schedule when U-Mary returns to the road for three more games this week. After a brief home respite last weekend U-Mary is in the midst of playing 7-of-9 games on the road.

ALUMNI WEEKEND: U-Mary men's basketball will hold an Alumni Weekend on Friday and Saturday, January 25-26. On Friday there is the Coaches Luncheon at 12 noon and a basketball game against Minnesota Duluth at 8 PM. Saturday begins with an alumni game at 9 AM. Alumni will be introduced at halftime of the men's game against St. Cloud State. A social gathering at the Bismarck Country Club by Tom O'Leary starying at 8 PM will wrap up the weekend.

FIRST START: Freshman guard Brandon Tyler made his first career start against Upper Iowa on Saturday. He scored 11 points, knocked down three treys and grabbed four rebounds, tying his career-high in each category.

OFF THE BENCH: Marc Musungayi came off the bench last weekend and produced two strong performances. He led the Marauders with 15 points and two blocks against Winona State on Friday. He followed up with 12 points and two blocks against Upper Iowa. The junior forward was 11-of-19 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free throw line.

500: Alex Dorr crossed the 500 point barrier at St. Cloud State on January 4, 2013 and now has 545 career points at U-Mary in 67 games. He is just the ninth Marauder to cross that figure since U-Mary began NCAA and NSIC competition in 2006-07. Josh Turner is right behind with 492 points.  

DORR LEADS NSIC IN FREE THROW PERCENTAGE: SR F Alex Dorr (Norwalk, IA) is tied with Wayne State's Amry Shelby for the NSIC lead in free throw percentage at 94.1 per cent. Dorr is 32-of-34 and Shelby is 48-of-51. Dorr ranked sixth in the NCAA last week but doesn't have enough attempts to qualify this week. 

DORR 58th IN NCAA IN REBOUNDING: Averaging 8.5 rebounds per game, Alex Dorr is currently 58th in the nation. He has four double digit rebounding games this season with a career-high 15 against Saint Joseph's.

DORR 55th NATIONALLY IN DOUBLE DOUBLES: After posting 18 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Minnesota Crookston for his fourth double double of the season, Alex Dorr is 55th nationally in reaching double figures in two categories in the same game. 

DORR 1st, 3rd IN NSIC IN FREE THROWS, REBOUNDING: Marauders senior forward Alex Dorr is tied for first in the Northern Sun in free throw percentage (94.1) and third in rebounding (8.5/game). Dorr also ranks 12th in scoring (14.4 points/game), 8th in three-pointer made/game (2.23) and 14th in three point shooting percentage (40.8).

OPEN DORR POLICY: Marauders senior forward Alex Dorr has made a big jump in his production this season. He is posting 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game after generating 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds as a junior. Always tremendous at the line, Dorr has improved from 78 per cent to 94.1 per cent this season. After recording one double double in his first two seasons Dorr has four this year alone.

TURNER'S TOP HITS: One of the nation's top three-point shooters, Josh Turner ranks 91st in the NCAA in three-pointers made per game with 2.31. He is 5th in the NSIC. For the year Turner is averaging 12.8 points per game.

TURNOVER TURNAROUND: After averaging 21.5 turnovers a game during the non-conference portion of their schedule, the Marauders have taken significantly better care of the ball since Northern Sun play started. In their nine games against NSIC opposition the Marauders are averaging just 13.4 turnovers per game.

LINE MATES: The Marauders have been stellar at the free throw line this season, ranking second in the Northern Sun and eighth in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage (.768). First in the NSIC in individual free throw shooting percentage, Alex Dorr leads the effort, making 32-of-34 attempts (94.1 per cent). Marc Musungayi is close behind (21-of-23) and Josh Turner is knocking down 82.4 per cent (28-of-34) of his free throw attempts. Mike Johnson checks in at 76.5 per cent (13-of-17).
CLEANING THE GLASS: Over the last five games the Marauders have outrebounded four opponents - including #19 St. Cloud State and #RV Winona State - and tied the fifth. U-Mary posted positive rebounding margins in three of four non-conference games and in seven games overall and holds a +2.5 rebounding margin for the season. 

CLEANING THE GLASS II: The Marauders feature two of the top 16 rebounders in the Northern Sun. Alex Dorr is third in the conference with 8.5 rebounds/game and Marc Musungayi is 16th at 5.6 rebounds/game.

THOU SHALT NOT STEAL: The Marauders are last in the NSIC in steals and in the NCAA with 2.9 steals/game.

FIVE ALIVE: Twice this season the Marauders have had five players reach double figures for points in a single game. Against Upper Iowa Jalen Jaspers (13 points), Marc Musungayi (12), Josh Turner (12), Alex Dorr (11) and Brandon Tyler (11) all reached double digits. Earlier in the season the Marauders managed the same feat against Minot State: Dorr (23), Turner (17), Jaspers (11), Noah Stewart (11) and Mike Johnson (10). Previously the last time was Feb. 12, 2011, in a 90-81 home win over Augustana: Anthony Moody (31), Cameron Lee (13), Eric Erdmann (12), Alex Dorr (11) and Jordan Wilhelm (10).

STARTING BLOCKS: Newcomer Marc Musungayi is quickly making himself known to Marauders fans in the low blocks. The junior center in his first year at U-Mary is averaging 9.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. He is sixth in the NSIC in field goal shooting percentage (58 per cent), 16th in the NSIC in rebounds and 12th in blocks (1.08/game).

PERFECTO: Marc Musungayi was perfect from the field and at the free throw line in the Marauders 82-70 loss to MSU Moorhead on Dec. 8, 2012. The junior forward hit all 11 shots from the floor and all three of his free throws on his way to a 25 point outing.
