Box Score Bismarck, ND – On a night where winter storms dominated the region, solid defense by both squads led to cold shooting inside the McDowell Activity Center. The University of Mary struggled offensively against a taller Winona State University squad in a 64-47 Marauders loss to the Warriors.
In a low scoring game, the Warriors (12-3 overall, 6-2 NSIC) blocked 12 Marauders (3-9, 2-6) shots and held U-Mary to a 28.1 shooting percentage. After struggling from the floor in the opening half, Winona State clicked along at 56 per cent in the second half to finish at 42.2 per cent overall.
Trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half and down 29-19 at intermission, U-Mary used a flurry of three-point shots early in the second half to close within two points. After three pointers from
Jalen Jaspers and
Mike Johnson,
Alex Dorr sandwiched two more treys around a
Josh Turner basket to pull the Marauders within 37-35 with just under 15 minutes to play.
The Warriors pushed back with a 19-2 run to put the game away, building a 56-37 advantage with 4:47 to go. Clayton Vette scored nine straight points for Winona State during the run.
Marc Musungayi keyed the Marauders efforts, leading the squad with 15 points and eight rebounds. Aggressive to the hoop, the junior forward hit 7-of-13 shots from the field. He also had two blocks.
Dorr was the Marauders only other player in double figures, pairing 11 points with eight rebounds. He had three of the Marauders six treys on the night and added two blocks of his own. Turner added six points and four assists.
Vette led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds for Winona State. The All-American also added four blocks and two steals. Caleb Palkert, Xavier Humphrey and Zander Culver all added 11 points each.
U-Mary was tremendous on the boards, holding a 40-33 rebounding advantage over WSU.
Playing at home for the first time in over 30 days, the Marauders conclude the weekend by hosting Upper Iowa University on Saturday, January 12, at 6 PM.
