Beavers Cut Down Marauders

Box Score Bemidji, MN – Facing the defending Northern Sun champion, the University of Mary defense gave up the fewest points it has allowed all year. Unfortunately for the Marauders the homestanding Bemidji State University defensive effort was even better in a 61-40 Beavers win.

The 40 points scored by the Marauders (2-6 overall, 1-3 NSIC) was the team's lowest output since a 76-40 loss at Southwest Minnesota State University on December 8, 2007. The 61 points allowed by U-Mary was the fewest given up by the Marauders since a 61-60 win at Wayne State College on December 10, 2012.

On a cold night in northern Minnesota, the Marauders shooting percentage was similar to the mid-20s temperature. U-Mary hit just 13-of-47 (27.7 per cent) shots on the night, including a 5-of-23 effort behind the three-point line. The Beavers (5-3, 3-1) were even worse behind the arc, making only 3-of-24 attempts. However, BSU was an impressive 23-of-34 inside the three-point line and connected on 44.8 per cent of its field goal attempts overall.

Alex Dorr was the lone Marauders player to hit for double digits, scoring 12 points.  The NSIC's leading rebounder, Dorr was held without a board as Bemidji State enjoyed a 41-28 edge on the glass, leading to a 12-4 advantage in second chance points.

The Beavers used their rebounding edge to dominate the paint, outscoring the Marauders 42-14 inside.

Off the bench, freshman Tyler Brandon scored nine points for U-Mary and Noah Stewart added seven.

Dermaine Crockrell led BSU with 22 points and five assists. Mason Walters posted a double double with 11 points and ten rebounds and Lance Rongstad added 11 points.

Bemidji State scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. The Marauders stayed close throughout the first half and trailed just 26-19 at intermission. The Beavers would put the game away with a 22-2 run that covered a ten minute span beginning late in the opening half.

U-Mary concludes its opening NSIC road trip against the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday, December 15. Game time is 6 PM.
