Well Balanced Attack for the Marauders Leads to Conference Win

Marauders celebrate a point in the fourth on in their 3-1 victory over SCSU (10/6)
Box Score Bismarck, ND – U-Mary dropped the first set to Saint Cloud, but pulled of a 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22) win by hitting the best percentage they have all year (.282).

Morgan Dake, Paige Smith, Allison Adams and Lauren Boldt each finished the game for the Marauders with 12 or more kills.

With the first set tied at 18-18 the Marauders looked to be in good position to take the set. Saint Cloud (6-11, 2-7 NSIC) had a different idea, as they went on a 7-0 run to end the game and win the first set 25-18. The Huskies' Ellie Dietzen led the charge with three kills in the run and eight in the set.

In the second game, the Marauders took the lead early on and never looked back on their way to a 25-19 win. Smith finished the set with five of her twelve kills on the night.

With the two teams knotted up at one game apiece, the third set was tightly contested. At no point in the set did either team lead by more than four, until a Boldt kill gave the Marauders the win 25-20.

With a chance to win a conference game, U-Mary was not going to let Saint Cloud deny them that opportunity. The Marauders jumped out early and led the entire set. Up 19-11, U-Mary was rolling. SCSU refused to rollover, however, as they went on a six nothing run to close the gap to 19-17. A timeout by the Marauders killed the run and they would go on to win the set 25-22 and the game 4-1.

Instrumental for the Marauders offensive attack was setter Emily Turkowski. Finishing with her second most assist of the season and a game high 45 assists, Turkowski led the way for the Marauders well-balanced attack.

In addition to U-Mary's impressive offensive effort, the defense also played a pivotal role in its win. Among the top teams in the Northern Sun in total blocks, the Marauders recorded double digits for the fourth time this season.

Defensive specialist Valerie Lesu also played a key role for the U-Mary defense, finishing with her second most digs of the season (21).

With the win, the Marauders (3-13, 3-6) record their third win of the season, surpassing last years total of two. U-Mary will be continuing their home-stand next weekend as they host nationally ranked opponents, Minnesota State and Concordia University.
