Robinson's Bench Boost Not Enough in Shootout Loss to Bulldogs

Box Score Bismarck, ND – Darius Robinson provided an offensive spark off the bench for the University of Mary but the Marauders were unable to keep pace with the University of Minnesota Duluth in an 87-81 home loss. The junior guard scored 23 points and hit five treys in the game for U-Mary.

Eight straight points by Robinson in the second half provided the Marauders a 57-52 lead. Another three by Robinson later gave U-Mary a 66-60 advantage, its largest of the night.

The two teams would battle the rest of the night with U-Mary (4-15 overall, 3-12 NSIC) taking its final lead at 70-69 on two Jalen Jaspers free throws. The Bulldogs (12-7, 9-6) built a six-point edge in short order, but a Robinson layup with 1:28 in the game pulled U-Mary within 81-79. After two UMD free throws, a Jaspers jumper with 35 seconds remaining would get U-Mary within 83-81. Unable to get a defensive stop, a Ryan Rasmussen layup and two Riley Walker free throws would seal the game for UMD.

Robinson hit 9-of-16 shots, including 5-of-10 behind the arc. He also added four rebounds. Jaspers chipped in 17 points. Damon Smith posted another strong game on both ends of the court, pairing 16 points and three assists with nine rebounds and two blocks. Alex Dorr added 10 points and six rebounds.

U-Mary had no answer for Rasmussen, who led all players with 29 points. He was 7-of-12 behind the arc. Walker and Brett Ervin both added 14 points.

The Marauders shot a solid 44.9 per cent from the floor to 38.2 per cent for the Bulldogs. UMD made up for the shooting difference with a 23-of-29 effort at the free throw line to the 10-of-17 mark for U-Mary. The Bulldogs also had a 46-41 rebounding edge.

Next on the schedule is a four-game road trip, beginning at the University of Minnesota Crookston on February 3.
