Marauders set for Florida spring break matches

LAKELAND, FL – The University of Mary tennis team prepares for their spring break matches in Florida as the Marauders plays five games in six days. UMary opens against Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL, on Thursday, February 27, at 1 pm. 

The Marauders then challenge Davenport University on Friday, February 28, at 12:30 pm in Orlando, FL, and Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, on Saturday, March 1, at 10 am.

UMary also faces Carnegie Mellon University in Orlando, FL, on Monday, March 3, and Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, FL, on Tuesday, March 4.

LAST TIME OUT
The Marauders went 1-1 last weekend. UMary defeated Winona State University 4-3 and fell 5-2 to Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Ilona Freitag went 2-0 in #2 singles. Freitag defeated Skylar Gary (WSU) 6-4, 6-2 and Avery Stilwell 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

ZHI JING NAMED NSIC PLAYER TO WATCH
For the fourth season in a row, Chloe Chong Zhi Jing was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tennis Player to Watch for the Marauders. The Senior has earned All-NSIC First Team Singles honors in all three seasons she has competed at UMary.

MARAUDERS PROJECTED TO FINISH FOURTH
UMary women's tennis is projected to finish 4th in the conference, according to the NSIC Coaches' Poll. Last season, the Marauders took second in the Northern Sun.

OTHER RETURNERS
Freitag returns for her senior season after earning All-NSIC Second Team Singles honors after competing as the Marauders three last year. The Le Locle, Switzerland, native went 7-2 in conference action.

Maria Estinvil returns after being named to the All-NSIC Second Team in singles action. The Quebec, Canada, native went 7-1 in the Northern Sun as she competed as the team's number four. UMary also returns Luba Moyo to the roster, who competed as the number six last year.

NEWCOMERS
The Marauders have added three freshmen to the roster. Valeria Bradley, Anna Sueflohn and Madeline Abbott look to make an immediate impact in their first season at UMary.

PORTER NAMED HEAD COACH
After serving the last two seasons as the Marauders assistant coach, Porter takes over the helm of the UMary tennis program. Porter was named the Marauders head coach on July 25, 2024. Porter's been the assistant boys and girls tennis coach at Mandan High School since the 2020-21 season and a tennis instructor since 2015. He's earned multiple all-conference honors as a tennis player.
