After three weeks off, the Marauders return to the diamond at MSU Denver for a four-game set Feb. 21-23

THIS WEEK
Idle nearly three weeks after playing four games in Tucson, AZ, the first weekend of February, the University of Mary baseball team returns to action with four games at Metropolitan State University Denver on Friday-Sunday February 21-23. The Marauders will play one game Friday (1 pm CST) and a doubleheader Saturday (1 pm CST) before wrapping up with a single game on Sunday (1 pm CST). All four games are slated to be played at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
 
SCHEDULE CHANGES
Forced to cancel a game against Regis University on Wednesday, Feb. 19, due to weather conditions, in Denver, the Marauders have added a game at Missouri Western on Wednesday, February 26. Game time in St. Joseph, MO, for the single 9-inning game is 3 pm.
 
THE RECORDS
The Marauders are 1-3 on the season… UMary finished the 2024 season with a record of 23-27 overall and 19-19 in the NSIC (7th place)… MSU Denver is 1-6 this season. The Roadrunners went 28-24 last year and 19-13 in the RMAC.
 
HISTORY
The Marauders are 1-5 against the Roadrunners. After dropping the first five meetings in a series that started in 2019, UMary picked up its first win last season with a 12-7 victory that featured two home runs and a double by Daniel Martin and seven innings on the hill by Paxton Miller… All six games have been played in Denver.

LAST TIME OUT
The Marauders went 1-3 in Tucson, dropping 9-7 and 15-5 decisions to CSU Pueblo and splitting two games with UC Colorado Springs (7-6 win, 0-1 loss).
 
 CLUTCH
Bryce Leafgren had a strong opening weekend for the Marauders that included a walk-off game-winning single in UMary's 7-6 win over UCCS. Leafgren went 6-for-10 with four RBIs and a run scored over the first four games. He had at least one hit in all four and two hits twice. 
 
DAZZLING DEBUTS
In his first games with UMary, Kieran Gaffney finished the four-game series 6-for-14. He doubled, scored twice, drove in three runs and walked twice. The third baseman had three hits and drove in three runs in game 2 against CSUP… Mikey Ramirez went 4-for-10 and scored two runs in three games.
 
POP
Noah Hull and Hank Griffin have two doubles each. Additionally Hull has a triple as all three of the All-Northern Sun 1st baseman's hits this season have gone for extra bases.
 
DAZZLING DEBUTS – PITCHING EDITION
Several Marauders made their UMary debuts on the hill in Tucson and made strong impressions:
  • Lucas Burgum threw 5.2 scoreless innings of relief in his lone appearance. The junior struck out six and allowed just two hits and a walk.
  • Sam Hayen struck out three and didn't allow a hit or walk in two scoreless innings
  • Aiden Johnson gave up one run in 4.0 innings, striking out four while allowing five hits and a walk
  • Ben Zahr pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out three while walking one without giving up a hit
  • Adam Golby gave up one run in four innings of work in his first start for UMary. He held UCCS to two hits and no walks while striking out five.
 
WELCOME BACK
The Marauders return 22 players, including 12 pitchers and 10 position players… Seven position players have earned at bats with the Marauders while eight pitchers have made appearances on the mound.
 
HANEY SELECTED TO 2025 NCBWA ALL-CENTRAL REGION PRESEASON TEAM
Marauders infielder Kalem Haney was named to the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-Central Region team. Haney becomes the first UMary player to earn NCAA preseason all-region baseball honors from the NCBWA.
 
HANEY NAMED UMARY'S 2025 NSIC PLAYER TO WATCH
A junior middle infielder from Lethbridge, Alberta, Kalem Haney was a dynamic leadoff hitter for UMary in 2024. Primarily playing second base, he hit .360/.460/.560 with a 1.010 OPS. He led the Marauders in steals (14 bases in 15 attempts) and triples (4) and was second in runs scored (48), doubles (13) while starting all 50 games. He also had five home runs. He had at least one hit in 39 games with 17 multiple hit performances. Only once did he fail to have a hit in back-to-back games. Haney was named to the 2024 All-NSIC 1st team and the 2024 NSIC All-defensive team. He earned NSIC Player of the Week honors once last year.
 
CHAMBERLAIN UMARY'S 2025 NSIC PRESEASON PITCHER TO WATCH
A junior right-handed pitcher from Laramie, WY, Ryan Chamberlain finished 2024 with a record of 3-2. He pitched 51 innings over 12 appearances, including six starts. Chamberlain tossed one complete game and struck out 41 batters while walking just 12 to post a WHIP of 1.37. He tied for the team lead in wins, was second in innings pitched and fourth in strikeouts.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Noah Hull is climbing the all-time leader board in home runs and RBIs at UMary. The senior first baseman is 3rd in home runs with 31. Tyler Liffrig (39) is the career record-holder, followed by Derek Shoen (37). The All-NSIC performer is the 7th UMary player to crack the century mark in RBIs and is 5th in program history (115). Jeff Wedul (141) and Liffrig (141) are tied for the all-time lead in runs batted in, followed by Shoen (135) and Cal James (133)… Hulls is also in the Marauders top 10 in hits (150), doubles (30) and closing in on runs scored (92).
 
SPENCER 2nd IN BASEBALL COACHING WINS
In just his fifth season as the Marauders head baseball coach, Tanner Spencer has accumulated 95 wins and moved into second place in career coaching victories at UMary. Steve LeGrand leads the way with 121 (1997-2001) with Brad Walsh third with 90 (2005-11). The Marauders have eclipsed 20 wins each of the last four seasons, the only 20 win seasons for UMary since beginning NCAA play in spring 2007.
 
2024 REWIND
  • The Marauders made the NSIC tournament for the 3rd time in four seasons, the only appearances in program history
  • UMary tied the school record for home runs, hitting 72 for the second straight season
  • Carter Beck was the NSIC Freshman of the Year
  • Kalem Haney and Mark Schommer earned NSIC 1st team honors
  • Noah Hull and Carter Beck earned NSIC 2nd team honors
