Carmichael named NSIC Athlete to Watch, Marauders picked 9th in women’s golf preseason coaches’ poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Going into the season with a particularly young roster, University of Mary women's golf is looking to build upon a 7th place finish at last year's NSIC Championships. The Marauders have been picked 9th in the Northern Sun's preseason coaches' poll.

While the roster does not have a senior, there is an ample amount of both experience and new faces. Carrie Carmichael, the squad's NSIC Athlete to Watch, joins Hazel Emter, Karrin Rustand, Grace Stroh, and Abby Thelen as this year's returning golfers. UMary has added three freshmen to its ranks as well.

"What excites me most about this year's team is the incredible balance we have between our experienced returning players and the fresh energy brought in by our three new freshmen," said fourth-year head coach Marion Hernandez. "Our returning group is not only strong but also seasoned, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record that will be invaluable throughout the season. Their familiarity with our program and their competitive edge will provide a solid foundation for us."

There is plenty of momentum going into the season for Carmichael as she prepares for her junior year. In July, she was victorious at the North Dakota Women's Golf State Stroke Play event at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson, proving she's ready for her third collegiate season.

"Carrie is clearly in fantastic form," said Hernandez. "Her performance this summer has not only boosted her confidence but also solidified her role as the team's No. 1 golfer. Carrie's ability to stay consistent and perform under pressure is one of her key strengths. Her win at the NDWGSA Stroke Play event was a testament to her dedication and skill, and it's evident that she's carrying that momentum into the new season. We're expecting her to lead the team with the same level of excellence and to continue setting a high standard for her teammates."

Carmichael was the overall winner of the Marauders Invitational last season and ended her year with a 14th-place finish at the conference championships.

The fall season begins for the Marauders on September 9 at the Tracy Lane Memorial Invitational hosted by Bemidji State University. UMary will host the Marauders Tournament from Hawktree Golf Course on September 30 and October 1.

The 2025 NSIC Championships will take place next spring on April 24-27 at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex in Smithville, Missouri.
