Box Score GRAND FORKS, ND - The University of Mary Tennis team closed out the weekend 2-0 following a second conference victory over Minnesota Crookston Sunday morning. The Marauders took the match 5-2 to earn their third straight victory, extending their overall record to 8-5 and 7-2 in the NSIC. This weekend's strong performance now firmly places UMary third in the Northern Sun behind Augustana and Minnesota State.
For the third straight match, the Marauders swept doubles play with Chong/Freitag winning #1 doubles and Mohamed/Awad taking #2 doubles by the same margin of 6-1 in both matchups.
Emily Needham and
Samantha Purpura clinched the UMary sweep with a 6-4 victory in #3 doubles.
Ilona Freitag gave the Marauders their first singles match victory on the day with opponent Kavya Singh retiring early in the #3 matchup. Freitag had already won the first set 6-0.
Hala Hossam Awad stretched her record to 12-1 with another defiant victory 6-0, 6-1 over Michelle Swyter. Awad remains unbeaten against DII opponents in her rookie season.
Doaa Farouk Mohamed then followed with her fifth straight singles victory in the #2 matchup, defeating Blaike Zander 6-2, 6-1.
Emily Needham shortly after put forth another solid performance, winning the #5 match 6-1, 6-3 over Sarah Velasquez.
Chloe Chong engaged in a tough battle in the #1 singles match. Splitting the first two sets with Maddi Schneider 6-4, 2-6, the formidable opponent Schneider prevailed in the super-tiebreaker set 10-2 over Chong.
Samantha Purpura battled hard but dropped the #6 match 3-6, 0-6 to Ashley Chomyn.
Head Coach Vida Saliendra credited intensity in the dominating doubles matches and was happy with each of her athletes' performances throughout the weekend.
UP NEXT
The Marauders will next compete in two weeks April 15-16 against Winona State and Upper Iowa from Fargo, ND. These will mark the final matches before the NSIC Championships on April 21-23.
