Marauders hit the road for weekend of matches

BISMARCK, ND – After a striking start to the season last weekend, the University of Mary Tennis team (1-0) hits the road for a weekend of matches in Virginia, MN. The Marauders will take on the University of Minnesota Duluth (4-0, 1-0 NSIC) on Saturday at 11am in a conference matchup, and end with St. Cloud State University (1-1, 0-1 NSIC) Sunday morning at 9. 

UPDATE - FRIDAY
Due to late travel conditions, UMary Tennis will not face Gustavus Adolphus College (1-4) Friday night. 

LAST TIME OUT 
Last weekend, the Marauders had their season opener at home against Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Marauders started the season off well with a 5-2 victory over the Dragons. 

Doaa Farouk Mohamed debuted in her first career #1 matchup and battled out a 7-5, 7-6 victory. Her performance earned her NSIC Tennis Player of the Week. Strong performances from Chloe Chong, Ilona Freitag, and Hala Hossam Awad in both singles and doubles added to the Marauders confident victory over MSU Moorhead.

OPPONENTS
University of Minnesota Duluth opened their conference play last weekend at home against St. Cloud State University. Their 5-2 victory added to their 4-0 overall record and gave them a 1-0 start to NSIC play. The Bulldogs carry four undefeated singles players this season, Shay Callaway, Megan Muller, Carly Chaney, and Olivia Honsey. Shay Callaway was recently honored with NSIC tennis player of the week, the first player of the week for the Bulldogs in 11 years. The Bulldogs and Marauders are neck-and-neck (6-6) in historical play since 2011. The Marauders look to gain the upper hand after the weekend matches. 

St. Cloud State University enters the weekend with a 1-1 overall record and 0-1 in the Northern Sun. The Huskies fell last weekend to UMD 5-2 in their first conference matchup. The Huskies player to watch is Claudia Muñoz Perez. Perez went 15-3 in the 2022 season at the no. 3, 4, and 5 singles spot and went 9-1 in conference play. The Huskies have the edge on the marauders with a historical record of 8-7 since 2008. The marauders look to turn the tides with a defiant win this weekend 

THE STAFF
Vida Saliendra returns for her 11th year as the UMary Head Tennis Coach. Saliendra has had an impressive career at the helm of Marauders Tennis, riding into 2023 on four consecutive winning seasons. The Marauders are 84-75 with Saliendra as their coach. She is joined by assistant coach Erik Porter, who is in his first season with the Marauders.
