Marauders return home to host Wolves Saturday in Never Surrender Cancer Awareness game

THIS WEEK
For the first time this season the University of Mary football team faces a fellow Northern Sun North division squad when the Marauders host Northern State University on Saturday, October 1. The Marauders annual Never Surrender Cancer Awareness Game kicks off at 2 pm from the MDU Resources Community Bowl. 

THE RECORDS/LAST WEEK
The Marauders are 0-4 overall and in the NSIC. UMary dropped a 31-28 decision at #23 Minnesota State University... Northern State is 2-2 after a 21-13 loss on the road to #13 Augustana.

  • The Marauders are looking for their first win of the season after opening with four straight one-possession losses
  • UMary owned second half leads against Wayne State, Winona State and #23 Minnesota State
  • Wayne State scored the winning touchdown with 1:46 left in the game and Minnesota State with 1:57 remaining 
  • Saturday's loss was the Marauders 7th by 8 or fewer points (one possession) over the last two seasons

WEEK 4 RECAP | #23 Minnesota State 31 UMary 28
  • UMary posted season-highs in yards (506), rushing yards (189), passing yards (317) and first downs (31)
  • UMary outgained MSU (506-386), had more 1st downs (31-22), owned time of possession (35:39/24:21) and was +1 in turnovers
  • UMary took a 14-0 lead on a 15 yard TD pass from Logan Nelson to Luke Bodine and a Gabe Levy 9 yard scoring run
  • After Minnesota State scored 24 straight points, UMary regained the lead on a 5 yard TD pass from Danny Kittner to Collin Gapen and a 21 yard TD run by Dave Small Jr.
  • MSU Scoring the winning touchdown on a 6 yard run by Shen Butler Lawson Jr. with 1:57 left in the game
  • UMary took over at their 25 yard line with 1:57 to play. Logan Nelson was injured after a 3 yard carry. On his 1st play, QB Jesse Forknell ran for 15 yards with another 15 yards added for an MSU personal foul. A 12 yard pass completion to Gapen placed he ball on MSU 31. Facing a 4th and 10, Kittner made a diving catch for a 29 yard gain to the MSU 2. After a 1 yard run by Forknell and an incomplete pass to stop the clock, Forknell's pass into the endzone was deflected and intercepted to end the Marauders drive.
  • Kittner caight 14 passes for 161 yards and also threw a 5 yard TD pass
  • Nelson was 22-of-35 for 271 yards and 1 TD and ran for 25
  • Gapen had 6 catches for 54 yards a 1 TD
  • Small ran for 87 yards a 1 TD on 19 carries

NEVER SURRENDER CANCER AWARENESS
In the ongoing effort to raise the awareness of cancer research and the need to support those battling cancer and survivors, Marauders SAAC (student-athlete advisory committee) will collect donations prior and during the game to benefit the Bismarck Cancer Center. Those who donate will receive a Marauders football Red Flag Mentality ("Never Surrender, Stronger Than Anything We Face") bracelet. During the game Marauders football helmets will be adorned with a purple ribbon to represent all cancers. 

UMARY SAINT GIANNA SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES RECOGNITION
The University of Mary Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences will be recognized during the football game for their efforts working on behalf of the Marauders football scholar-athletes. Currently 114 Marauders scholar-athletes - including 15 members of Marauders football listed below - are majoring in health sciences:
Nick Bunkers, Elijah Heinrich, Brayden Iverson, Major    Kelley, Asmerom Mahammad, Gabe Levy, Jeremiah Moore, Jakob Petry, Josh Zakavec, Jaydon Coley, Tre Gola-Callard, Drake Lalim, John West, Ryan Woroniecki and Jaxon Feller

Saint Gianna School of Health Science faculty and staff plus a guest will be admitted free to the game with their MCard. Each home game Marauders football honors UMary faculty and staff. 

FIRST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION MARAUDERS FOOTBALL GAMEDAY SPONSOR FOR UMARY-NORTHERN STATE CONTEST

10 AM | Tailgating in the Prairie Farms Dairy Marauders Alley officially starts at 10 am in the North Parking Lot of the MDU Resources Community Bowl. Laughing Sun Brewing and Norm's Eatery will have food for purchase in the tailgate area. 
 
11 AM | The 8th annual UMary Wrestling Dean Walker Memorial Throwdown is set for 11 am in the Prairie Farms Dairy Marauders Alley.
 
11:30 AM | Marauders football team arrives in the Prairie Farms Dairy Marauders Alley to greet the fans.
 
1 PM | The UMary swim team opens their 2022-23 schedule against Jamestown across the parking lot at the BSC Aquatic & Fitness Center. Marauders swimming home events are free and open to the public.
 
1 PM | Gates to the MDU Resources Community Bowl open to the public

1 PM | The Laughing Sun Brewing Marauders Bay beer garden inside the MDU Resources Community Bowl. Adults are welcome in the Marauders Bay and can enjoy a Laughing Sun Brewing beverage while watching the Marauders until the end of the third quarter.

  • This is the 16th meeting between the Marauders and the Wolves
  • NSU leads the series 8-7
  • UMary won the first 5 games in the series, including the first two contests that were played in the Metrodome
  • The Marauders broke the Wolves 6-game win streak last October in Aberdeen with a 49-42 UMary win. Logan Nelson threw for 456 yards and a school record-tying 6 TDs. RECORD WATCH | KITTNER
Danny Kittner, the Marauders all-time leading receiver with 239 catches and 3,170 yards, has caught 26 touchdown passes to trail only Jake Pfau (34) and Tyler Steffan and Luke Little (30). Kittner broke the career record for receptions in the final game of last season and the career yardage record in game two at Winona State.

With 239 catches for 3,170 yards, Danny Kittner has a shot as breaking the Northern Sun career records in both categories.

All-American Danny Kittner may be best known for leading all levels of NCAA football in receptions and receiving yardage and leading NCAA D2 in all purpose yardage in 2021. But Kittner impacts the Marauders in far more ways than just running routes:  
  • Threw his first career TD pass against Minnesota State. For his career he has completed 4-of-7 passes for 107 yards
  • Holds for extra points and field goals
  • Returns punts and kickoffs
  • Scored a 2-point conversion in 2021
  • Recovered an onside kick in 2021

CLIMBING THE CHARTS | NELSON
  • Logan Nelson moved into 3rd place in career passing yardage at UMary with 5,727 yards, passing both Paul Cronin (4,990) and Tim Garcia (5,154) this fall... Craig Bagnell is the all-time leader (9,170), followed by Chris Schwab (7,786)
  • Nelson is 5th in TD passes with 54. Craig Bagnell leads with 75, followed by Chris Schwab (73), Tim Garcia (58) and Paul Cronin (55).

Dave Small Jr. is the 15th Marauder to crack 1,000 career rushing yards. In just over two seasons (15 games) at UMary Small has run for 1,056 yards. He has also rushed for 10 TDs, including a 21 yard scoring run Saturday against Minnesota State. Small is now 13th all-time at UMary after passing Evan Gross (1,023) and Mike Brunner (1,053). Next on the list is #12 Josh Murray (1,095), #11 Bayland Rippenkroger (1,106), #10 James Barrrett (1,133) and #9 Dariouse Gravely (1,248).

Among those wearing the Blue & Orange for the first time were transfers Adam Brown, Sonny Brown, Jordan Duson, Korvin Feagins, Caden Green and Xavier Lewis, redshirt freshmen Tre Gola-Callard, Braydon Evertsen, Jaxon Feller, Raphael Hamilton, Eli Heinrich, Ian Kopf, Gabe Levy, Mason Phillips, and Carter Smith and true freshmen Jaxon Young and Traivon Dyson.  

FAMILY MATTERS
Twins Ty'Rese Gibson and Th'Rhae Gibson and Alex Godfrey and Norman Godfrey are the two sets of brothers on the Marauders this season... Ryan Woroniecki and Jacob Thomsen both have had brothers play for UMary... Dave Small Jr. and Tylen Small are cousins... Devin Beck's father was a member of the Marauders "Originals" first football team.

NELSON NAMED TO PRESEASON ELITE 100
All-American senior QB Logan Neson was named to the 2022 D2Football.com Elite 100 team. The Billings, MT, native threw for 3,732 yards and 41 touchdowns while tossing just six interceptions and completing 65% of his passes. The NSIC North 1st team quarterback set single season UMary and NSIC records for passing yards while the scoring passes are a Marauders record... Twice he threw six touchdowns in a single game to tie the school record... He earned Don Hansen All-American honorable mention honors and D2Football.com Elite 100 team in 2021. 

TY'RESE GIBSON NAMED NSIC PLAYER TO WATCH
1st team All-NSIC North Division CB Ty'Rese Gibson was named the Marauders Defensive Player to Watch in 2022 in the conference preseason coaches' poll. A junior from Los Angeles, CA, Gibson picked off a team-leading two passes for 51 return yards. Both his interceptions led to points for UMary. He also broke up five passes and made 29 tackles (22 solo). Gibson also earned NSIC All-Academic Team honors.
