Marauders set to open regular season at Rimrock Classic on Thursday in Billings

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary soccer team opens their 2022 season with a pair of non-conference games at the "7th annual Rimrock Classic in Memory of Trevor Wildberger" in Billings, MT. The Marauders kick off the regular season against Black Hills State University at 2 pm CST/1 pm MT on Thursday, August 25, at Amend Park. UMary wraps up the weekend against Rimrock Classic host MSU Billings on Saturday, August 27. Game time is 4 pm CST/3 pm MT at Herb Klindt Field on the Rocky Mountain College campus.

RECORD
This is the opening weekend for UMary… The Marauders finished the 2021 season 9-7-3 overall, including a 6th place finish in the 16-team Northern Sun with 26 points on a record of 8-5-2… The Marauders were 5-1-2 at home in 2021… The Marauders season ended in the opening round of the 2021 Northern Sun tournament with a 1-0 loss at #25 Minnesota State on an own goal.
 
BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK
The Marauders look to extend their streak of post-season appearances to five in 2022. In 2021 UMary qualified for postseason play for the fourth straight season and the fifth time overall under the direction of UMary head coach Sarah Cook… The four straight NSIC tournament appearances is the second-longest streak in program history. UMary qualified for the postseason its first seven years in the league (2006-2012).
 
RIMROCK BACKGROUND
This is the Marauders sixth Rimrock appearance since 2016, rolling up a record of 6-3-1 over their first five visits. Last season the Marauders defeated Black Hills State 3-0 before dropping a 2-0 decision to MSU Billings.
 
UMARY PICKED 5th IN 2022 NSIC PRESEASON COACHES POLL
The Marauders were picked to finish fifth in the 2022 Northern Sun Preseason Coaches' Poll. Minnesota State tops the coaches' poll with Bemidji State slated second, followed by Augustana, Concordia-St. Paul, UMary, Minot State, St. Cloud State and Northern State. The second eight are Winona State, Wayne State, Minnesota Duluth, Sioux Falls, Southwest Minnesota State, Upper Iowa, MSU Moorhead and Minnesota Crookston.
 
WALTMAN, PARK NAMED THE MARAUDERS NSIC PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2022
A two-time All-Northern Sun second team choice in her career (2019, 2021), Sioux Falls, SD, native Madisyn Waltman is tied for the Marauders career record of shutouts with 25. A team captain and a 3-time NSIC all-academic team selection, the UMary goalkeeper had eight clean sheets last season and posted a goals against average of 0.80. A starter since arriving on campus, she had nine shutouts her sophomore year when the Marauders set a school record for fewest goals allowed/game at 0.53.
 
Sophomore forward Kendra Park made an immediate impact on the Marauders attack as a freshman last fall. Primarily providing a spark off the bench, she led the team with five goals. The Lake Havasu, AZ, native posted two game-winning goals, including in a 2-goal effort against Concordia-St. Paul and a golden goal in a 1-0 win over Winona State. Park tied for second on the team min points (10) and was 9th in the NSIC in game-winners (2) and 14th in counters.
 
WALTMAN, DOKARA 2022 UMARY TEAM CAPTAINS
 Seniors Madisyn Waltman and Yasmina Dokara are the Marauders captains for 2022. A goalkeeper, Waltman (Sioux Falls, SD) is a 5th year starter for the Marauders. Dokara, a midfielder from Fargo, ND, has started since her freshman season in 2019.
 
14 RETURN
The Marauders side returns 14 players from 2021. A pair of midyear transfers joined the Marauders last spring and 12 newcomers (nine freshmen and three transfers) round out the 28-player squad. Seniors Yasmina Dokara, Jessica Lemmon, Taylor Meyrick and Madisyn Waltman and sophomores Sophia Lange, Kendra Park and Ava Vizenor are returning starters. A pair of Wyoming natives who joined the squad last spring also return. Defender Eli Olsen and forward Andi Hunsicker played together at Laramie County Community College. Olson also played at Charleston Southern University.
 
INTERNATIONAL ADDITIONS
The Marauders added four international players to their squad for 2022. All freshmen, Tara Young and Kira Hockley hail from England, Rio Spruenken joins the squad from Germany and Isabelle Parson is Canadian. UMary has a total of five international scholar-athletes with the return of Olivia Buckle, a native of Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.

Marauders goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman is tied with Kristen Werner for the Marauders career record in shutouts with 25. Entering her final season, Waltman posted eight shutouts as a freshman in 2018, added nine as a sophomore in 2019, and recorded eight clean sheets as a junior in 2021. Her efforts earned Waltman All-NSIC 2nd team honors in 2019 and 2021. Over the course of her career Waltman owns a record of 26-19-9 for UMary with a stellar goals against average of 0.86 and a save percentage of .817… During her sophomore year that Marauders set a school record by recording a goals against average of 0.53.  
 
DEEEE – FENCE
The Marauders allowed more than one goal in a game just five times in 2021 in 19 total contests. For the year UMary held the opposition to a paltry 18 goals in 19 games.
 
PARK PLACE
Kendra Park led the Marauders in goals last season, finding the net five times as a freshman. She tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with two. Park's five goals was the most by a UMary freshman since Alex Bachman-Williams tallied six times in 2010.
 
GOAL
The Marauders return just three players who scored goals last season. Kendra Park posted five counters and Taylor Meyrick and Kaitlyn Schwass added two apiece to count for nine of the Marauders 25 goals. Brianna Ramey also returns after scoring four times but the sophomore is recovering from injury.
 
LOST
The Marauders are missing four starters from last year and all four earned All-NSIC honors; Kayla Alcott, Samantha Guzman, Cassidy Pierce and Hannah Richter.
 
GREAT 8
The Marauders 8-game unbeaten streak to start Northern Sun play in 2021 was UMary's longest of the NCAA era... the six straight wins tied the Marauders longest winning streak since reeling off six straight in 2012… During the run UMary posted five straight shutouts, the most since 2007 in the Marauders run to the NCAA tournament… during the 8-game streak the Marauders allowed just three goals.
 
LCCC CONNECTION
The Marauders have four former Laramie County Community College scholar-athletes this season. Seniors Jessica Lemmon and Taylor Meyrick joined the team from LCCC prior to the 2021 season. Eli Olsen and Andi Hunsicker transferred to UMary last spring. All four played for now-former LCCC head coach Nate Ulness, a former UMary assistant coach and alumni who played soccer for the Marauders.
 
NCAA D1 ADDITIONS
The Marauders have three former NCAA Division I players joining the team for this season. Eli Olsen (Charleston Southern), Mo Malone (UTEP) and Alexa Quaranta (Western Illinois) are in their first season with UMary. Olsen is a junior, Malone a sophomore and Quranta is a redshirt freshman after not playing last season at WIU.
 
28th SEASON OF MARAUDERS SOCCER
This is the 28th season of University of Mary women's soccer. The Marauders took to the pitch for the first time in 1995.
