THIS WEEK AT THE NORTHERN SUN TOURNAMENT
Making a second straight Northern Sun baseball tournament appearance, the 8^th seeded University of Mary opens the 2022 double elimination tournament against conference champion and #1 seed Augustana on Wednesday, May 11. First pitch is set for 12 noon at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, SD, the home park of the 18^th ranked and tournament host Vikings.
 
The Marauders-Viking victor will play the winner of the #4 Minot State-#5 Winona State game at 4 pm on Thursday, May 12. The losers in the Marauders-Vikings and Beavers-Warriors game face off in an elimination game at 12 noon on Thursday. Winner of that contest will play again later that night.
 
After the semifinal round on Friday, May 13, the championship game(s) are set for Saturday, May 14.
 
AT STAKE
The winner of the Northern Sun tournament earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Centra Region tournament May 19-21 at two 4-team sites.
 
NSIC TOURNAMENT NOTES

• The 8-team tournament is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, May 11-14, in Sioux Falls and Brandon, SD.
• Games will be played at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls (all four days) and at First National Bank Field at Aspen Park Brandon, SD (Wednesday and Thursday only)
• Augustana hosts the games at Ronken Park and the University of Sioux Falls is host at FNBF Field
• General tournament pass is $35. Per day ticket prices are $20/adult and $10/student with children 5 and under admitted free

RECORDS
The Marauders finished the regular season enter the weekend 24-25 overall this season and 16-18 in Northern Sun play, finishing 8^th in the conference standings… NSIC champion Augustana is 41-8-1 overall and 31-5 in the NSIC.                                                                                                                                                            
 
MARAUDERS v VIKINGS 2022
The Vikings captured both game against the Marauders this season, 4-2 and 8-7 at Ronken Field. Calvin James hit a two-run home run in the opener. Derek Shoen set school records with three home runs and seven RBIs in the second game… in 2021 Shoen provided one of the season's most memorable moments when he hit a walkoff home run in a 5-4 UMary win over Augustana.
 
LAST WEEK
The Marauders went 3-2 last week to claim a slot in the tournament… UMary split a double header with St. Cloud State (L 8-1, W 2-1 in 12 innings) and claimed the season-ending series at Minnesota Crookston (W 4-2, W 5-4, L 8-5).
 
FAST FINISH
The Marauders won 14 of their last 21 games to gain a spot in the tournament.
 
MARAUDERS CLOSING IN ON HOME RUN RECORD
UMary is one shy of equaling last season's record of 50 home runs. Led by Derek Shoen with 14 round trippers, 11 Marauders have hit a home run this season. James Martin is second with seven and Calvin James has six… UMary has outhomered the opposition 49-32.
 
SHOEN SHOTS
One of the nation's top offensive players, Derek Shoen is having another tremendous season for the Marauders. The 2021 All-NSIC 1^st baseman is hitting .329/.472/.653 for a 1.125 OPS. He has 12 doubles, 14 home runs, has scored 48 runs and driven in 51. He has set the Marauders single season records for home runs and RBIs… With 25 career home runs in just his second season at UMary, Shoen now ranks 3^rd all-time. Tyler Liffrig is the Marauders career home run leader with 39, followed by Jeff Wedul (27)… The junior from Truman, MN, is 94^th in NCAA D2 in home runs/game (.29), 59^th in total home runs, and 112^th in RBIs.
 
DOUBLE DUTY
In addition to being a force in the middle of the order, Derek Shoen has taken a late inning relief role. A starter on the mound last year, Shoen has pitched seven times in relief and earned two saves.
 
DOUBLE DUTY – TY JONES EDITION
Ty Jones is also seeing double duty for the Marauders. In addition to providing stellar defense in center field, the senior also has started seven games for the Marauders on the hill. In his last pitching performance, Jones struck out ten in 6.1 innings against St. Cloud State, allowing one run on three hits. He is second on the team in steals with seven and has struck out 38 hitters and issued 19 walks in in 35.1 innings
 
CLOSER BY COMMITTEE
The Marauders have five different players with saves this season. Mark Schommer, Gabe Ridenour, Paxton Miller and Derek Shoen each have two. Liam Sommer has one.
 
RUNS BY CAL
All-NSIC 3B and 2021 Freshman of the Year Cal James is one of the nation's top run producers with the innate ability to both score and drive in runs.  James is 60-of-184 at the plate, hitting .326/.435/.533 for a .968 OPS with 48 runs scored, 18 doubles, a triple and six home runs with 42 RBIs in 49 games… He is 40^th in the nation in doubles… The sophomore from Buffalo, MN, is now the Marauders single season leader in doubles with 18.
 
HEAT
The Marauders pitchers strike out 9.4 hitters/nine innings to rank 47^th in NCAA D2 out of 251 teams.
 
LIMITING FACTORS
UMary pitchers give up just 8.91 hits/nine innings, ranking 5^th in the NSIC and 43^rd in NCAA D2.

The Marauders average 1.00 home runs per game to rank 5^th in the NSIC and 81^st in NCAA D2.
 
DOMINATION
Austin Wagner has dominated the opposition over the course of his first ten starts this season. The junior lefthander is 5-3 with 91 strikeouts and 12 walks in 64.2 innings. He has allowed just 51 hits and 22 earned runs for a 3.06 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP… His total of 91 strikeouts is a new school single season record… Wagner set a school single game record with 15 strikeouts against Minnesota Duluth in a 6-3 win. He fanned 12 the week earlier against Upper Iowa per Iowa in 6.0 innings. Wagner posted 11 strikeouts in his second start this season, allowing just two hits, no walks and zero earned runs over five innings in a 15-5 UMary win at UCCS… Wagner is 10^th in strikeouts-to-walks ratio (7.58), 15^th in WHIP (0.97) and 15^th in strikeouts per nine innings (12.7).
 
BODY BLOW
Kyle Jameson and Derek Shoen are among the nation's leaders in being hit by a pitch. James on has been hit 17 times to rank 21^st in NCAA D2 in hit by pitch per game (.40). Shoen has been struck 12 times and is 105^th in hit by pitch per game (.24).
 
FOUR SCORE
Kyle Jameson has scored four runs in a game three times this season, tying the UMary NCAA-era single game record each time. The sophomore outfielder in his first season at UMary ranks 21^st in the nation in hit by pitches/game (0.40). For the season Jameson is 36-for-130 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs, 35 runs scored and 24 RBIs for a slash line of .277/.446/.421 and an .867 OPS.
 
POWER PLAY
After hitting one home run and 10 doubles in his first two seasons with the Marauders (159 at bats), James Martin has found his stroke as a senior in 2022. The Montana native has seven home runs, nine doubles and three triples in 146 at bats so far this season. The 2021 NSIC Gold Glove second baseman is hitting .308/.401/.555 for a .956 OPS with 31 runs scored and 32 RBIs.
 
FLEXIBILITY
In a truly unusual season spring weather had an impact on the NSIC season for UMary and the conference overall. All but five of the Marauders first 32 scheduled Northern Sun games have either been played on a different date or a different location – or both – than what was originally scheduled. Despite all the changes the Marauders have played all but one scheduled conference games.
 
ROAD WARRIORS
The Marauders played their first 22 games of the season away from home. After seven games at home the Marauders returned to the road for 12 more games. UMary is getting some games back with the site reversal this weekend from Aberdeen, SD, to Mandan-Bismarck.

Offense Sets Records at UC Colorado Springs | The Marauders set or tied several records in UMary's 23-17 win at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Feb. 28, 2022, rallying to score the final 12 runs of the game:

• Tied school record for runs in a game (23 also scored in 1999)
• 23 hits new school record (22 in 2000)
• 21 RBIs new school record (20 in 1999, 2008)
• 7 doubles (new NCAA-era record)
• 2 home runs and 6 RBIs for Ben Prediger ties NCAA-era record

8-game win streak
The Marauders put together an eight game win streak this season. The previous high of the NCAA era was seven in 2013 and 2007. The 2007 7-game win streak was the program's longest NSIC streak. 
 
Wagner sets single game strikeout record with 15
Austin Wagner struck out a school record 15 hitters in the Marauders 6-3 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth on April 16, 2022. The junior lefty recorded 12 of the first 13 outs on strikes. In 5.2 innings, Wagner allowed six hits three runs, two earned runs, walked one and struck out 15 to increase his season record to 3-2. The old record was 14 by Mike Gustavsson in 1999. The olde NCAA era mark was 13 by Jake Johnson against UMD in 2016… this is the third time this season Wagner punched out 11 or more hitters in a game.
 
NSIC Honors Wagner, Prediger | For the first time in program history, the University of Mary baseball team swept both the Northern Sun Player and Pitcher of the Week honors in the same week as both Ben Prediger and Austin Wagner were honored on March 1… A catcher from Calgary, Alberta, Ben Prediger went 8-for-10 with a double, two home runs and 10 RBI in three wins over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The sophomore scored seven runs and slashed .800/.833/.1.500 with a 2.333 OPS. In a 9-4 win over the Mountain Lions on Sunday Prediger was 4-for-4 in the win with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Prediger wrapped up the series in a record performance on Monday in a 23-17 win as the Marauders tied a school record for runs in a game and establish new marks for hits (23) and runs batted in (21) in a single game. Prediger blasted two home runs and drove in six runs to tie UMary's NCAA era highs in both categories. He was 3-for-3 with three runs scored as the Marauders rallied from a 10-run deficit after four innings. Coming off the bench in the seventh inning, Prediger scored the first and last run of an 8-run inning. With the Marauders down 17-11, Prediger led off with a pinch hit single before scoring on a James Martin home run. Prediger capped the inning with a 3-run home run to give UMary a 19-17 lead. He later capped the scoring with a 3-run home run in the top of the 9th inning… Making his second start of the year, Wagner was once again dominant on the hill. The junior lefthander struck out 11 in five innings on his way to his second win in the Marauders 15-5 victory at UCCS. Wagner allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter. The lone run scored against him was unearned. The strikeouts matched his career high… Prediger is the Marauders first NSIC Player of the Week since Jason Shaul was honored in April 2014. The previous Marauders NSIC Pitcher of the week was Jonathan Draheim in April 2021.
 
Shoen Sets NCAA Era Records for HRs, RBIs at Augustana | Derek Shoen had a historic performance for the Marauders against the Vikings on Tuesday. The All-Northern Sun first baseman hit three home runs and drove in seven runs to set UMary NCAA era records in both categories. He finished the 3-for-3 with three home runs, three runs scored, seven RBIs and a walk in UMary's 8-7 loss… His 12 total bases ties Cal James' NCAA mark set last season at Southwest Minnesota State o May 1, 2021… The Marauders previous NCAA era high was two home runs (17 times, including three times each by Calvin James and Tyler Liffrig) and six RBIs (two times | James and Ben Prediger)… Ben Prediger was the last person to match the old highs when he hit two home runs and drove in six runs in a 23-17 win at UC Colorado Springs earlier this season on February 28, 2022. 
 
Team Single Game Home Run Record Tied
The Marauders tied the school record for home runs in a game when UMary blasted six in a 9-6 win at the University of Sioux Falls. Kendall Keller blasted two shots and Derek Shoen, Noah Hull, James Martin and Dakota Finley each hit one. The six home runs matched the total UMary hit at Upper Iowa in May 2007.
 
Papierski throws out three base stealers twice this season to tie UMary NCAA-era record
Twice in four games Krece Papierski threw out three would-be base stealers to tie the Marauders NCAA era single game record. Papierski gunned down three attempted base stealers in the Marauders first game on Saturday against Upper Iowa. He then turned the trick in the Marauders first game at Sioux Falls on Tuesday. Sam Ingemansen threw out three base stealers against Mayville State in 2014 and Sean Hennan did the same against Sioux Falls in 2015.
 
Season records set in back-to-back at bats and in back-to-back games
Marauders set three season records last week in back to back games and back to back at bats. On Thursday, April 21, in the 9^th inning, Cal James set the Marauders doubles record with 17 while driving in the game-winning run. Next at bat was Derek Shoen, who capped the Marauders 5-run rally in the 12-7 win over the Beavers with his record-setting 13^th home run of the season… In UMary's next game against Minot State on Saturday, April 23, Austin Wagner broke the single season strikeout record with his 74^th of the season.
 
James breaks single season doubles records
Calvin James hit his 17^th double of the season against Bemidji State to set a new single season record for UMary. His two-bagger in the ninth inning scored the game-winning run in a 12-9 victory. The old record of 16 was held by Jason Duppong (2000) and Mike Feldman (2008).
 
Shoen breaks single season home run record
Derek Shoen broke the Marauders single season home run record with his 13^th round tripper against Bemidji State on  April 21. Shoen hit a two-run blast in the top of the 9^th inning to cap a 5-run rally in a 12-9 win over the Beavers. The old record was 12 by Steve Laasko in 1998.
 
Wagner breaks single season strikeout record
One week after breaking the single game strikeout record, Austin Wagner broke UMary's single season strikeout record. The junior lefthanded from Fond du Lac, WI, struck out six Minot State hitters on Saturday, April 23, to run his season total to 76. Marauders Hall of Famer Dale DIngmann held the previous record with 74 strikeouts in 2000.
 
Shoen breaks single season RBI record
Just five days after breaking the Marauders single season home run record, Derek Shoen set a new standard for driving in runs in a single season. Shoen drove in his 49^th run of the season at Southwest Minnesota State on Wednesday, April 27, when he singled home Ben Prediger in the ninth inning of the second game. The former record was 48 by Todd Houston.
 
Marauders break program record for NCAA era wins
The Marauders registered their 22^nd win of the season with UMary's 2-1 11^th inning walkoff win over St. Cloud State. The former NCAA era record was 21 in 2021… This is the first time the Marauders have posted consecutive 20 win seasons since beginning NCAA play in 2007.
 
Marauders break team single season for team strikeouts
The Marauders broke the program record for strikeouts on Sunday, May 1, when Paxton Miller struck out Gus Radel in the ninth inning of UMary's 5-0 win in the second game of the day. It was the Marauders 344^th strikeout of the season to pass their total of 343 last season. With three games left UMary pitchers now have 375 strikeouts.

• 3B Calvin James was named the NSIC Freshman of the Year in 2021 and was a first team selection. James slashed .358.443/.636/1.079 with 34 runs scored, 13 doubles, 9 home runs and 34 RBIs.
• 1B/P Derek Schoen earned 2021 All-NSIC first team honors as a first baseman. He slashed .340/.414/.667/1.081 with 32 runs scored, 10 doubles, 11 home runs, and 32 RBIs. He also struck out 33 hitters in 37 innings on the hill.
• 2B James Martin was selected the 2021 NSIC Gold Glove winner at second base. He committed just one error in 142 chances for a .993 fielding percentage. Martin also turned 11 double plays. Offensively he stole nine bases and scored 18 runs.   

 
NUMBERS TO KNOW | 2021 EDITION
21 | The Marauders set an NCAA-era program record (2007 and on) for wins in a season. The old mark was 18 in 2010. This is the most wins overall for the Marauders since posting 30 wins in 2002.
 
18 | The 18 wins in NSIC play set a team record, eclipsing the previous total of 14 in 2008.
 
.563 | The Marauders NSIC winning percentage of .563 (18-14) is a program-best, ahead of the program mark of .550 (11-9) in 2007. The 2007 season – UMary's 1st year in the Northern Sun – is the only other season the Marauders have had a winning record in the NSIC.
 
2002 | The Marauders finished 2021 with a winning record for the first time since 2002, when UMary went 30-15, won the DAC-10 tournament and advanced to the NAIA regional tournament.

6 | Jonathon Draheim set a Marauders UMary NCAA-era single season record for wins with six. The previous record was five by Matt Medeiros (2010) and Jeff Skadeland (2013). The school record for single season wins is 10 by Marauders Hall of Famer Ryan Astle in 2002. Draheim threw a no-hitter during the season. He led the Marauders in innings pitched (55.1) and had a 4.23 ERA. Draheim walked six, struck out 44 and had four complete games. 
 
5 |Paxton Miller set a Marauders NCAA-era (2007 and on) record for saves in a season with five. The previous high was three by Chris Scott and Charles Bielejeski in 2019 and Travis Famias in 2012. The school record is eight by Chad Kruckenberg (1998) and Travis Dressler (2004).
 
1.6 | Andrew Brooks averaged 1.6 strikeouts/inning. The righthander fanned 38 batters in 24 innings and allowed just 11 hits.
