Marauders take on Bulldogs in weekend series relocated to Wayne, NE

THIS WEEK
In a weekend series relocated from Bismarck, ND, due to a spring blizzard that has enveloped North Dakota, the University of Mary baseball team will face the University of Minnesota Duluth in Wayne, NE. The three-game Northern Sun weekend set begins on Friday, April 15, with a single 9-inning game. The two teams then play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is 12 noon each day at the Pete Chapman Complex.

NOTE | A webstream of the Marauders-Bulldogs will be available at www.goumary.com/coverage. However live stats may not be available due to the site relocation.

NEXT WEEK
The Marauders are scheduled play at Bemidji State University on Tuesday, April 20, in a Northern State doubleheader. Game time is 1:30 pm. UMary then returns home to host Minot State University on Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24.

RECORDS
The Marauders are 13-18 overall this season and 5-11 in Northern Sun play… The Bulldogs are 14-14 and 8-7.

LAST WEEK
The Marauders opened a three-game weekend with a pair of losses to Upper Iowa (6-5, 7-2) before rebounding with a 13-4 win over the Peacocks on Sunday. The Marauders then swept the University of Sioux Falls 8-7 and 9-6 in a series moved to Sioux Falls, SD, due to the start of a spring storm in Bismarck.

FLEXIBILITY
Spring weather had an impact on the opening of the NSIC season for UMary and the conference overall. The Marauders series at Wayne State was moved back a day, the series against Minnesota State had a site change to Sioux City, IA, and the Augustana twin bill was moved forward a day. After playing a pair at home against Winona State on Saturday, Sunday's game was wiped out by snowfall. The home series slated against Concordia-St. Paul was then moved up a day from Wednesday to Tuesday. The three-game home set with Upper Iowa was played as originally scheduled, but the Marauders home games with Sioux Falls and Minnesota Duluth were relocated.

ROAD WARRIORS
The Marauders played their first 22 games of the season away from home. After seven games at home the Marauders are now on the road for seven straight.

HOME RUN RECORD DAY
The Marauders tied the school record for home runs in a game when UMary blasted six in a 9-6 win at the University of Sioux Falls. Kendall Keller blasted two shots and Derek Shoen, Noah Hull, James Martin and Dakota Finley each hit one. The six home runs matched the total UMary hit at Upper Iowa in May 2007.

EXTRA EXTRA
In the Marauders doubleheader sweep of the Cougars, UMary pounded out 12 extra base hits in their 19 total hits for the day. In the opener all five Marauders hits were for extra bases (two doubles, a triple and two home runs)… In game two the Marauders had a double and six home runs… Conversely Sioux Falls had just one extra base hit among their 22 total hits.

SWIPER NO SWIPING
Twice in four games Krece Papierski threw out three would-be base stealers to tie the Marauders NCAA era single game record. Papierski gunned down three attempted base stealers in the Marauders first game on Saturday against Upper Iowa. He then turned the trick in the Marauders first game at Sioux Falls on Tuesday. Sam Ingemansen threw out three base stealers against Mayville State in 2014 and Sean Hennan did the same against Sioux Falls in 2015.

WALKOFF
A Noah Hull blast over the right field wall in the bottom of the 7th inning at Sioux Falls on Tuesday gave the Marauders their first walk off win of the season in the 8-7 victory. UMary has suffered six walk off losses this season.

SHOEN SHOTS
With eight home runs over his last 10 games – including a run of seven in five games – and 11 on the season, Derek Shoen has tied the Marauders NCAA era single season record for home runs. Shoen also hit 11 last season to equal the total of Tyler Liffrig, who also accomplished the feat twice (2008, 2009). The all-time UMary mark is 12 by Steve Laasko in 1998… The All-Northern Sun senior first baseman from Truman, MN, now owns 22 career home runs to rank 4th all-time at UMary. Tyler Liffrig is the Marauders career home run leader with 39, followed by Jeff Wedul (27), Mike Feldman (24) and Andy Leer (21).

SHOEN SHOTS PART 2
One of the nation's top offensive players, Derek Shoen is having another tremendous season for the Marauders. The 2021 All-NSIC 1st baseman is hitting .333/.467/.713 for a 1.180 OPS. He has eight doubles, 11 home runs, has scored 31 runs and driven in 41. He has tied the Marauders single season NCAA era record for home runs and moved into 6th on the all-time UMary single season RBI count (Todd Houston 48 (1997), Jeff Wedul 46 (2000), Todd Houston 45 (1998), Tyler Liffrig 43 (2008), Doug Herr 42 (1999) and Derek Ihde 41 (2002))… Shoen is 35th in NCAA D2 in home runs/game (.35), 48th in total home runs, and 28th in RBIs/game (1.32).

DOUBLE DUTY
In addition to being a force in the middle of the order, Derek Shoen has taken a late inning relief role. A starter on the mound last year, Shoen has pitched four times in relief, including three times in the last week. After pitching a scoreless inning of relief against Concordia-St. Paul, he pitched 3.0 innings against Upper Iowa. He was saddled with the extra inning loss as defensive lapses allowed the Peacocks to score three unearned runs. Shoen earned a save against Sioux Falls after throwing two perfect innings. For the season he has pitched 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, a walk, and three unearned runs.

RBI GUY
All-NSIC 3B and 2021 Freshman of the Year Calvin James is 57th in NCAA D2 in runs batted in per game at 1.23. The sophomore from Buffalo, MN, has 38 RBIs in 31 games. FOUR SCORE
Kyle Jameson has scored four runs in a game three times this season, tying the UMary NCAA-era single game record each time. Prediger blasted two home runs and drove in six runs to tie UMary's NCAA era highs in both categories. He was 3-for-3 with three runs scored as the Marauders rallied from a 10-run deficit after four innings. Coming off the bench in the seventh inning, Prediger scored the first and last run of an 8-run inning. With the Marauders down 17-11, Prediger led off with a pinch hit single before scoring on a James Martin home run. Prediger capped the inning with a 3-run home run to give UMary a 19-17 lead. He later capped the scoring with a 3-run home run in the top of the 9th inning… Making his second start of the year, Wagner was once again dominant on the hill. The junior lefthander struck out 11 in five innings on his way to his second win in the Marauders 15-5 victory at UCCS. Wagner allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter. The lone run scored against him was unearned. The strikeouts matched his career high… Prediger is the Marauders first NSIC Player of the Week since Jason Shaul was honored in April 2014. The previous Marauders NSIC Pitcher of the week was Jonathan Draheim in April 2021.
