Guzman header carries Marauders to 1-0 win over Bulldogs

DULUTH, MN – Samantha Guzman scored the lone goal of the game and Madisyn Waltman posted her 19th career clean sheet to headline the University of Mary's 1-0 road win over the University of Minnesota Duluth. The victory closed out an impressive Northern Sun opening weekend road trip for the Marauders, who gained a draw at St. Cloud State University on Friday.

"It was a tremendous effort to get four points from our first conference weekend in two years," said Marauders head coach Sarah Cook. "We has great leadership from the returners and our newcomers stepped up in a big way. In a broader sense it was good to just see all the NSIC playing conference soccer games after such a long hiatus."

UMary improves to 2-1-2 on the season overall and 1-0-1 in the NSIC. UMD is 0-5-0 and 0-2-0.

The win was the fourth straight for the Marauders over the Bulldogs and the third straight by shutout. Including a draw in 2015, UMary is undefeated in its last five outings against UMD.

Following a scoreless 1st half, the Marauders scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute.

With the Bulldogs on the attack, Waltman snared a crossing attempt and quickly played the ball to initiate a counter attack by the Marauders. Moments later UMary earned a corner kick to the left of the UMD goal. Hannah Richter served a ball into the goal area that eluded the Bulldog goalkeeper's clearing attempt and went directly to Guzman on one hop. Without hesitation, the Marauders All-NSIC center back headed the ball into the center of the net for Guzman's first counter of the year.

The Marauders continued to press and fired three more shots at the Bulldogs net in the next three minutes, including one on frame, but couldn't extend their lead.

Defensively over the last 27 minutes, UMary limited UMD to just three shots and required Waltman to make only one save.

Richter finished the weekend with a foot in each UMary goal. The All-NSIC forward had a goal and an assist against SCSU before assisting on the lone goal in the UMD game.

Richter and Kayla Alcott paced the Marauders attack against the Bulldogs with three shots total and two on target. Kendra Park had four shots with one on frame.

Waltman finished with five saves for her second shutout of the season and the 19th of her career, 4th all-time in school history.

The Marauders held an edge in shots (12-11), shots on target (6-5) and corner kicks (3-2) while also being whistled for more fouls (9-3).

UMary wraps up their 6-game road trip next weekend – including four straight NSIC games – with matches at the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Sept. 24, and at Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday, Sept. 26.
