Ramey strikes for lone goal in Marauders 1-0 win over Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Freshman Brianna Ramey scored the only goal of the game to lead the University of Mary to a 1-0 road win against the University of Sioux Falls. This is the second straight game goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman and the Marauders defense has turned a single goal into a UMary win.

"This was a great win today!" said Marauders head soccer coach Sarah Cook. "Getting points on the road is hard, especially with the opening stretch of away games we have. The team competed hard today and really fought for the win. Brianna Ramey was excellent. She worked hard in midfield and got the game-winner, which was also her first collegiate goal. It's always great to see new girls stepping up each week to contribute to our success. I'm very proud of the team!"

The Marauders remain undefeated in the Northern Sun, improving to 2-0-1 in league play and 3-1-2 overall. The Cougars slip to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC.

For the second straight match the Marauders scored the only goal of the contest off a corner kick triggered by Hannah Richter. The All-Northern Sun forward served the ball to the top of the goal box where both teams had an opportunity to control the ball. Ramey, who was subbed into the game just a couple minutes earlier, was unable to initially connect with the ball in the air. Ramey persevered, circling back for the loose ball to hammer home a shot from the penalty kick spot into the upper left corner of the net in the 37th minute for her first career goal.

The Marauders hoped to double their lead before intermission but a shot by Richter was stopped by USF goalkeeper Caroline Titze.

UMary generated additional scoring opportunities in the second half but were unable to finish.

Defensively the Marauders bottled up the Cougars attack all day. After allowing just one shot in the first half, UMary held USF to two in the second for a total of three all match. Of the three USF shots, two came from outside the box with the third taken from just inside the top right corner. Five of the Marauders 11 shots came from inside the box.

Waltman picked up her third clean sheet of the season and the 20th of her career. The junior moved into a tie for 3rd all-time in shutouts at UMary with Brannigan Coyle.

Richter had a busy day for the Marauders, taking a game-high five shots with four on target. Kayla Alcott fired off a pair of shots with both on frame. Three different players to shots for USF.

UMary held advantages in shots (11-3), shots on frame (10-3) and corner kicks (4-1). The Marauders were also whistled for more fouls (11-8).

The Marauders close out a 6-game road trip – including their opening four games of NSIC play – at Southwest Minnesota State University at 1 pm on Sunday, Sept. 26.
