MARSHALL, MN – Another dominant effort on the hill by
Austin Wagner and a dynamic offensive performance by
Calvin James led the University of Mary baseball team to sweep Saturday's doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State University. The Marauders captured the opener 7-0 before outlasting the Mustangs 18-14 in game two. The sweep allowed the Marauders to jump up into 7
th place in the NSIC standings.

After pitching five perfect innings in his last start,
Austin Wagner pitched six scoreless innings today against SMSU. He limited the Mustangs to two hits and one walk while striking out four. The native of Fond du Lacs, WI, needed just 70 pitches to dispatch the SMSU hitters. After allowing a bunt single to lead off the third inning, Wagner retired 12 straight hitters to earn his second straight win.
PIVOT POINT
The Marauders scored the only run they needed in the second inning.
Ty Jones led off with a single and took second on a passed ball before scoring on a
Dakota Finley double to right center. Wagner and
Mitch Oehme took charge for the rest of the game with Wagner throwing six scoreless innings and Oehme pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Calvin James blasted two of the Marauders four home runs in the game, lashed five hits and drove in six runs to lead the UMary offense in a wild 18-14 win in extra innings. The Marauders recorded 18 hits in the game but one of the nation's top defensive teams also committed four errors which led to four SMSU unearned runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings. For the game five different Marauders had multiple hits.
PIVOT POINT
The Marauders had built a seemingly insurmountable 12-2 lead that soon came crumbling down. After the Mustangs scored two in the sixth and four in the eighth to pull within 12-9, UMary added a pair of runs in the ninth. SMSU continued to fight, scoring five times – four unearned on two Marauders errors – to pull even at 14-14. UMary took control in the 10
th inning, plating four runs. After
James Martin broke the deadlock with a bases-loaded walk and
Spencer Gillund was hit by a pitch to force in a second run, James pulled a pitch into right field to score two more runs and seal the UMary win.
Andrew Brooks came in to pitch and retired all three Mustangs he faced in order, including the last two on strikeouts.
