Marauders edged 6-4 in NSIC tournament opener against Huskies

ST. CLOUD, MN – Making their first appearance in the Northern Sun baseball tournament, the University of Mary pushed homestanding St. Cloud State University to the wire in a 6-4 Huskies win over the Marauders in the opening game of a best-of-3 series. 6th seed UMary rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the 7th inning before 3rd seed SCSU scored the last four runs of the game.

Game two between UMary and SCSU is set for 12 noon on Friday, May 14, at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MN.

A pitcher's duel early on between a pair of lefties, UMary's Austin Wagner and SCSU's Matt Osterberg kept the game scoreless through three innings before the Huskies touched Wagner for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Wagner, who struck out nine Huskies in 5.0 innings of work, had allowed just one run in his previous 19 innings.

The Marauders knocked Osterberg out of the game in the sixth. Ty Jones hit a sacrifice fly to score Derek Shoen before a Quentin Evers single plated Calvin James to knot the game at 2-2.

UMary kept rolling in the seventh. After Tyrus Barclay led off with a single, Shoen followed with a long blast over the left field fence to give the Marauders their first lead of the day at 4-2.

SCSU fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Paul Steffensen tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly before a Matt Quade home run tied the game at 4-4.

The Huskies regained the lead for good in the eighth on a 2-run single through the left side by Max Gamm.

Shoen paced the Marauders attack with three hits. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Barclay finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.

The Marauders fall to 21-19 on the season. SCSU is 21-12.
