BISMARCK, ND –
Jonathan Draheim pitched his way into the University of Mary baseball record books as he tossed only the fourth no-hitter in Marauders program history. The rangy righthander recorded 20 straight outs to close out UMary's 4-0 win over Upper Iowa University.
The Peacocks later rallied for a 4-3 win over the Marauders in game two of the Northern Sun doubleheader.
GAME 1 University of Mary 4 Upper Iowa University 0
Jonathan Draheim and Upper Iowa righthander Duncan Snider matched each other inning for inning as neither starting pitcher allowed a hit in the game. It was only when Snider was removed after the fifth inning that either team was able to record a hit.
Both pitchers were close to getting knocked out in the first inning. Draheim hit two batters and faced a bases loaded situation with just one out. The Jordan, MN, native escaped unscathed as he induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the Peacocks scoring threat. Snider nearly matched Draheim, walking one batter and hitting a second before a ground out and a strike out ended the Marauders opportunity.
But while Snider began to tire in the fifth, Draheim kept humming. Starting with the double play in the first, the UMary sophomore recorded 20 straight outs and closed out the game with six straight perfect innings.
PIVOT POINT
After Snider hit a batter and walked another in the fifth inning, the Peacocks turned the ball over to Jarrett Ramer in the sixth. The move paid immediate dividends for the Marauders. On Ramer's first pitch
Braxton Inniss singled to center for the first hit of the game by either team. Two pitches later
Derek Shoen doubled to right center field.
Calvin James followed with an opposite field double to left field, clearing the bases to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead. James soon scored on a passed ball and
Spencer Gillund, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a two-out error to push the Marauders advantage to 4-0.
