Offensive explosion carries Marauders past Yellow Jackets in season opener

MINOT, ND – Playing competitively for the first time in 435 days, the University of Mary women's soccer team put forth a dominant effort in a 6-1 win over Black Hills State University. Six different Marauders scored goals in the game and the defense held the Yellow Jackets to seven shots.

Despite not playing since November 2019 and having the pandemic wipe out their traditional fall season, the Marauders came out firing on all cylinders. The Marauders scored three times in both halves to win their first outing of the season.

Played indoors at the Minot State Bubble, Emma Davies opened the scoring for the Marauders. The senior scored low into the left side of the net off an assist by fellow senior Hannah Richter at the 19:37 mark.

Less than three minutes later, Yasmina Dokara also scored into the lower left side to double the Marauders advantage. Noelle Vigneri closed out the first half fireworks with a goal at the 39:44 mark to send UMary into halftime leading 3-0.

The Marauders offensive onslaught continued when Emma Snider struck for her first goal for UMary when the transfer found the net less than seven minutes into the second half. In a reversal of the first goal of the game, Richter, went high into the center of the net at 57:18. The All-Northern Sun forward scored off a helper from Davies.

After a Yellow Jackets goal in the 83rd minute, All-NSIC defender Samantha Guzman converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to cap the Marauders victory.

UMary held a 19-7 advantage in shots and a 10-5 advantage in shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Snædís Daníelsdóttir picked up the win for the Marauders after posting four saves.

The Marauders 2020-21 season continues on Saturday, Feb. 13, with a return trip to Minot to face fellow Northern Sun member Minot State University.
