Marauders Go On The Road To Take On The Mavericks

BISMARCK, ND - The University of Mary wrestling team (2-1, 1-1) will travel to Mankato, MN, to take on #11 Minnesota State University – Mankato on Thursday, February 4, at 7 pm. The Marauders are coming off a victory over Minot State 24-20, winning the "Battle for the Barrel." MSUM is coming off a loss to #1 St. Cloud State University.
 
Sophomore Anthony Velazquez was the hero for UMary in last Thursday's win over Minot. With the Marauders up 21-20, the contest was decided by Velazquez in the final match of the night at 157. Needing to take a time out for an injury early in the match, Velasquez returned to the mat to win an amazing match over Nathan Baca 9-7.

LAST TIME OUT
UMary lost to MSUM 29-12 last season. Jeremy Leintz (125) was the standout star for the Marauders as he pinned Trenton McManus at the 6:06 mark to earn UMary six points. Braydon Huber and Dom Tudor also won in their respective matches.
 
RANKINGS
UMary has two ranked wrestlers-  Braydon Huber is 10th at 165 and Dom Tudor is 15th at 285 in the latest NCAA Division II poll by The Open Mat.
In the first regular-season National Wrestling Coaches Association team rankings of 2021 released January 22, the Marauders received seven votes to set UMary just outside the top 25. In the NWCA preseason poll, the Marauders finished just outside the top 25 with ten votes, tied for the most out of any team not ranked.
 
Individually, three Marauders crack the first NWCA individual rankings of the season. Huber is 9th at 165. Bruss checks in at 11 at 174. Dom Tudor, fresh off a victory over a former national qualifier, is 12th at 285.
 
UMary has five wrestlers in the Super Region V rankings. Laken Boese is 5th at 133. Anthony Velazquez is 4th at 157. Huber is ranked second at 165. Bruss is 3rd at 174. Tudor ranks third for 285.
 
The Mavericks are ranked 14th in the latest NCAA Division II poll by The Open Mat. They have four ranked wrestlers – Trenton McManus is 7th at 125, Kolbe O'Brien is 14th at 141, Kyle Rathman is 3rd at 149 and Trevor Turiff is 7th at 174.
 
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP QAULIFIERS
UMary returns two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships last season, Phillip Springsteen and Braydon Huber. Huber is ranked 5th for the 157 IBS weight class in the National Wrestling Coaches Association preseason rankings. Springsteen finished second in the NCAA Division II Super Regional V as he earned the eighth seed at the 2020 NCAA Championships.
 
Huber is coming off a dominant performance over Minot State's Brody Mohr, winning by pinfall at the 6:14 mark.
 
UNDEFEATED
Max Bruss is undefeated this season and has yet to surrender a point. He won his first match against SCSU's #9 Devin Donovan winning by a 1-0 decision. Bruss then followed that up by picking up a win over MSU's Noah Gallardo by a 5-0 decision. Bruss most recent victory was over Minot State's Noah Gallardo pinning him at the 6:16 mark.
 
CONFERENCE RANKINGS
The Marauders are 1-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and sit in sixth place in the NSIC standings. The Mavericks, led by head coach Jim Makovsky, have gone 3-1 in the conference and are currently third in the NSIC.
