Marauders Open NSIC Play With Road Matchup Against Minot State

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary women's basketball team opens up NSIC play this weekend with a big matchup against in-state rivals, Minot State. The Marauders and Beavers will square off on Saturday, November 30 at 3:30 PM in Minot, ND.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The last time the Marauders took the court was for a dominant defensive performance that included only allowing Yellowstone Christian to put up a total of 23 points on the game. The Marauders held the Centurions to just one first quarter point. All 12 Marauders who played scored with Askvig leading the way with 14. UMary would claim victory by a score of 87-23.


 
THE RECORD
The Marauders come into the weekend with a 6-3 record.

 
OPPO RESEARCH – MINOT STATE
The Beavers come into the week with a 2-1 record, winning their last two matchups over Dickinson State and Yellowstone Christian. The Beavers are led by a trio of scorers who are averaging double digit points. Mariah Payne leads the way for the Beavers with 16.5 PPG. Calli Delsman puts up 10.7 PPG and a team high of 6.3 rebounds per game. Anna Counts joins the party, averaging 10 PPG. Bethany Theodore leads the team in assists with 4.7 per game, ranking fourth in the NSIC.
 
LAST MATCHUP
The last time these two teams met was in December of 2018 when the Marauders took down the Beavers by a score of 67-58. UMary used a big first quarter, outscoring the Beavers 24-11 to jumpstart their lead, which held until the end. Cassie Askvig had a big double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Macy Williams added 15 points.


HISTORY LESSON
In a series that stretches back to the mid 1970s, the University of Mary holds a commanding 53-38 edge in the all-time series against Minot State University… The series went on hiatus when the Marauders moved to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun in 2006 and resumed when the Beavers began NCAA play in 2011-12. Since renewing their Highway 83 rivalry, the Marauders hold a slight advantage over the Beavers at 9-7 overall and 8-6 in NSIC play… The Marauders recently posted recent season sweeps in 2014-15, 2016-17, and 2018-19… UMary is 4-4 at home and 5-3 on the road against Minot State over the last seven years.

UMary is sixth in the Northern Sun in points per game averaging 76.2. The Marauders have a plus 22.2 points scoring margin over the opponents which ranks second in the Northern Sun. Cassie Askvig is second in the conference in scoring, averaging 20 PPG. The Marauders rank third in the conference in field goal percentage (45.9). Askvig ranks sixth in the conference with a field goal percentage of 53.4 percent.
 
A HELPING PASS
The Marauders sure know how to share the ball. The team ranks third in the conference in assists, averaging 18.1 assists per game. Macy Williams ranks fifth in the conference averaging 4.4 assists per game. She is tied for second in the conference with teammate Coral Gillette in assist to turnover ratio.. Coral Gillette ranks 11th with 3.2 assists per game.

 
DEEEE-FENSE
The Marauders allow just 54 points/game, third in the NSIC. Teams are making just 36.1 percent of their shots against UMary, ranking them sixth in the conference in field goal percentage defense.
 
REJECTION
The Marauders are 11th in the NSIC in blocked shots at 2.44/game. Lauren Rotunda is tied for 15th in the NSIC with 0.8 blocks/game.

UMary averages 9.44 steals per game this season, ranking them third in the Northern Sun. Christal Hearn leads the team with 2.2 steals a game, ranking ninth in the conference. 
 
DOWNTOWN
Averaging eight treys/game, the Marauders rank seventh in the NSIC. Shooting 33.6 percent from behind the arc, UMary is eighth in the conference in three point shooting percentage. Coral Gillette is fifth in the conference averaging 2.7 three pointers per game.
 
CHARITY STRIPE
Shooting 71.5 percent from the free throw line as a team this season the Marauders rank fifth in the NSIC. Cassie Askvig shoots 76.5 percent from the line, ranking her 14th in the NSIC.
 
CRASHING THE GLASS
The Marauders rank seventh in the NSIC in rebounding offense and sixth in the NSIC in rebounding defense. UMary ranks fourth in rebounding margin with a plus 7.7 RPG average. Lexie Schneider is second in the NSIC in rebounding, pulling down nine boards per game. Askvig joins her in the top 20, coming in at 19th with 6.2 RPG.

LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS
Coming into the season as defending NSIC player of the year the expectations are high for senior Cassie Askvig and she is living up to those expectations. The Marauders senior is averaging 20 PPG and 6.2 RPG early on this season.
