MINOT, ND – The barrel is staying in Bismarck! University of Mary wrestling team put on quite the performance tonight to win the second annual Battle for the Barrel! UMary won five bouts to take down their in-state rivals Minot State by a score of 20-18.
With the win, UMary improves to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in the NSIC. Minot State falls to 2-9 overall.
The Marauders started things off slow. Both
Gerardo Jaime (285) and
Nate Humann (125) lost to their Minot State foes by decision putting the Marauders behind 6-0.
Tate Barnhardt (133) got things going for UMary and provided a much needed spark. The nations #6 wrestler jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first period thanks to four, two point takedowns and a four point near fall. Barnhardt sealed the deal on the victory by technical fall at the 4:29 mark 19-4. The win gave the Marauders five points and brought the score to 6-5.
Noah Huff (141) lost to Jered Sublet of the Beavers by a 9-2 decision.
The Marauders wins leader,
Max Bruss (149) beat Tanner Crissler by a 7-4 decision. Two reversals in the third period propelled the freshman to victory.
Devyn Sweem (157) lost by fall to Zachary Berry of the Beavers. This gave Minot State a 15-8 lead.
Austin Eichmann (165) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and was able to fend off his opponent for the remainder of the bout. The junior won his match by a 3-1 decision.
Phillip Springsteen (174) made short work of his opponent, pinning him at the 1:25 mark. The redshirt sophomores dominant win gave UMary a much needed six points and a 17-15 lead.
Lance Jarrett (184) lost by a 5-0 decision to give Minot State an 18-17 lead heading into the final match.
The 197 lbs match was a winner take all bout. The two foes went head to head with the winner of the match claiming the barrel for his school. A scoreless first period led to even more anticipation entering the final two. At the end of the second period
Ryan Stottler of UMary held a 2-1 lead. Je-Mario Jones of Minot State tied things up at three a piece in the third period. With time winding down, Stottler made an impressive reversal to take the lead and never looked back from there, taking the match by a 6-4 decision. The win sealed the deal on a 20-18 win for the Marauders, won the barrel, avenged a loss earlier in the season to the same opponent, and won him dude of the dual.
With the win, UMary will hold onto the barrel for another year!
The Marauders return to action next weekend for two road duals. They will first take on #9 Minnesota State - Mankato on January 31 at 7 PM. They will follow that up with a dual against #19 Upper Iowa on February 1 at 7 PM.
