BEMIDJI, MN – The University of Mary came out early in the match looking like they had something to prove, dominating the first set against the Beavers of Bemidji State. The visiting Marauders posted game highs in kills, dig, and assists but it was the serving and defense of the Beavers that led the home team to come out victorious, defeating UMary in four sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-19, 25-17).
With the loss, the Marauders fall to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Beavers are 5-9 and 2-4.
The Marauders came out on fire against the Beavers, taking the lead early and never looking back. The Marauders sealed the victory on a kill by Madison Bergthold to win the first set 25-19. This was the Marauders first set win in the last six games.
After the big first set win, the Marauders fell into a bit of a slump and lost the next three sets. In the second set the Beavers were able to quickly work their way up to a double digit lead and held on take the set 25-15 and even the match.
The third set was all Marauders at the start as UMary held an 18-14 lead at one point. The Beavers then went on a big run to close out set three with a 25-19 win.
Now with the momentum on their side the Beavers, BSU took control early during the fourth set and didn't let go, winning what proved to be the final set 25-17 to take the match.
It was the Beavers serving and blocking that allowed them to take the match against the Marauders. The Beavers recorded nine aces and ten blocks during the match.
Despite the loss, the Marauders had some impressive stat lines. Natalia Cruz led the match in kills with 12 while Anna Nietfeld added an additional 10 kills and posted a .207 hitting percentage. Sydney Murphy once again lead the match in assists with 27 and Breanna Donarski lead the match with 18 digs. Cruz (13 digs), Murphy (11) and Nietfeld (10) all posted double digit digs and finished the match with double doubles.
Anna Averkamp led BSU with 10 kills.
The Marauders continue their road trip when they take on the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Saturday, Sept. 22, at 2 pm in Crookston, Minnesota.
