BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary volleyball team would welcome the Bemidji State Beavers to town for the Marauders final home match of the season. UMary would honor
Geovana Almeida, the lone senior of the Marauders on senior day. UMary would come out energized after a big win yesterday, determined to keep the winning streak going. They would win the first set with ease but the Beavers would have the upper hand in the next three sets to take down the Marauders in four sets. (25-21, 25-16, 25-17, 25-19).
With the loss the Marauders fall to 4-22 on the season and 1-17 in NSIC play.
The Marauders would come out on fire in set number one, posting a hitting percentage of .245 as a team during the set. The Beavers would try and make things interesting only trailing by a score of 15-14 late in match. The Marauders would then pull away thanks to timely kills by
Morgan Schnabel,
Bailey Harms, and
Brittany Brusven. The Marauders would clinch the first set 25-21 off of a big kill by
Bailey Harms when she received an assist from
Natalia Cruz.
The second set was back and forth at the beginning with neither team being able to establish control over the set. The Beavers would then go on a 10-3 run to pull away 22-13. The Marauders would not be able to overcome the deficit and would drop the second set 25-16.
The Beavers would jump out to a 6-0 lead in the third set. The Marauders were able to battle back to make things close thanks to two straight aces by
Julianna Hughes. BSU would then go on a 5-0 run to clinch the set by a score of 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Marauders came out hot determined not to let senior day end in a loss. UMary would jump out to a 7-0 lead behind the serving of
Julianna Hughes and the attacking of
Julianna Kari. Bemidji State would Battle back to tie the set up at 10 a piece. The set would then go back and forth until the Beavers were able to string together six straight points to take an 18-15 lead. The Marauders would battle back to bring the set to 20-19 but the Beavers would go on another 5-0 run to clinch the set and the match by a score of 25-19.
Freshman
Bailey Harms had a big day posting a game game high of 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .323 to go along with her two blocks.
Morgan Schnabel posted another double-double recording 12 thunderous kills to go along with her 12 digs.
Sydney Murphy led the team with 23 assists.
Brittany Brusven added another 14.
Natalia Cruz posted a team high of 16 digs during the match.
Julianna Kari recorded an impressive .250 hitting percentage and recorded eight kills.
Senior
Geovana Almeida now has 816 career digs and 84 aces. Her 816 digs ranks her seventh in school history during the Marauders NCAA era. The 84 aces ranks her second in school history during the Marauders NCAA era.
The Marauders will close out their season on the road next weekend. They will take on #8 Minnesota Duluth on Friday, November 2 at 6 PM. They will follow that up with a match against Saint Cloud State on Saturday, November 3 at 2 pm to close out the season.
