Pair of wins by Bremar headline early spring break matches for Marauders tennis

ORLANDO, FL – Christina Bremar claimed two wins and Lucia Bolibruch and Lisa Anderson also earned victories to headline the University of Mary tennis team's efforts on the first two days of their five-match spring break trip to Orlando, FL. Facing some of their best competition of the season while playing a player short, Mary opened with a 9-0 loss to Otterbein before dropping consecutive 7-2 decisions to Hanover and Augustana (IL).

The combined record of Mary's three opponents is 34-10. Mary falls to 1-8 this season with the three non-conference losses.

Competing without injured team captain Catherine Gibbens, who plays both number one singles and doubles, the Marauders had to adjust their lineup. A big beneficiary of the change is Bremer, who moved into the fifth singles slot for Mary. After playing singles just once the first six Mary matches of the year, the junior from Del Mar, CA, improved to 3-1 this season after her two wins on Thursday.

Mary was swept in its opener at the USTA National Campus Tennis Center by Otterbein. Lucia Bolibruch fell just short of picking up a Marauders win. The freshman pushed Makayla Sutter to a tiebreaker in Bolibruch's 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 loss at #2 singles.

Bremer just missed forcing a tiebreaker in a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Mariella Briones.

Bolibruch and Bremar earned the Marauders first individual wins of the southern swing in the 7-2 loss to Hanover.

Continuing her strong play from the previous match, Bolibruch again had to go to a tiebreaker, this time coming through on top. After falling to Meghan Farrell 3-6 in the opening set, the freshman from North Kingstown, RI, bounced back to win the second set 6-3 before taking the tiebreaker 10-7.

Bremer soon followed with the second Mary win of the match, dispatching Kelly Gehlbach in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at #5 singles.

Mary came up just short in two other matches. After taking the first set 6-4, Marauders senior Meredith Holt lost the second set 6-1 before succumbing to a narrow 10-8 loss in the tiebreaker. It was Holt's fourth tiebreaker of the season.

At #6 singles, Shanna Stevenson's bid for a singles win was derailed in a tiebreaker. Downed 7-5 in the opener, Stevenson rebounded for a 6-2 win in the second set before suffering a 10-5 setback.

The second day ended with another hard-fought loss for the Marauders. Facing an Augustana Vikings team that has just one loss in 15 decisions, Mary battled all night but could manage just a pair of individual wins in the 7-2 defeat.

Bremar finished perfect on the day at #5 singles. She defeated Vicki Andonova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to claim her third victory in four outings this season.

Anderson followed with a narrow win at #6 singles. A sophomore from Aitkin, MN, Anderson squeaked out a narrow 7-6 win in the opening set. After falling 0-6 in the second, she claimed the match with a 10-5 victory in the tiebreaker.

Eileen Leong just missed picking up a win at #3 singles. The junior suffered a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Caitlyn Schaeffer.

The Marauders close out their Orlando trip on Friday, March 3, against Kentucky Wesleyan and Wartburg.
