VIRGINIA, MN – A match closer the the final score indicated, the University of Mary women's tennis team came up short in pair of tiebreakers to drop a 6-3 decision to St. Cloud State University.
Strong at the bottom of the lineup, Mary captured the last two singles and the third in doubles.
Lisa Anderson and
Shanna Stevenson picked up Mary's first win of the day, rolling to an 8-4 victory in #3 doubles over Quintos dos Santos and Sommer Kopff.
For the second straight day,
Eileen Leong won #5 singles. The junior from Pierre, SD, took the first set 6-5 before Alexie Portz defaulted.
Danielle Wolf then claimed #6 singles, defeating Ann Marie White 6-4, 7-6
Mary suffered narrow losses at #2 and #4 singles.
Meredith Holt lost the opening set 6-4 (11-9) before rolling to a 6-1 win in the second to knot the match. Mary Roque Diversi then rebounded to win the super tiebreaker 1-0.
In another close match,
Anastasia Bruss rebounded from a 7-5 setback in the first set to claim the second 7-6. In another super tiebreaker setback, SCSU's Jill Kedrowski edged Bruss 1-0 (10-5).
The Marauders next open their home season with matches against Sioux Falls and Augustana on Feb. 18-19.
