VIRGINIA, MN – In an exciting season opener that came down to the last match, the University of Mary fell 5-4 against the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Marauders captured a pair of doubles matches and two singles contests but couldn't come up with a fifth win.
The Marauders jumped out to a 2-1 lead after all three doubles matches were completed. Senior
Meredith Holt teamed with freshman
Lucia Bolibruch to win the #2 doubles match by a score of 9-7 over Megan Anderson and Elsa Erickson.
Lisa Anderson and
Shanna Stevenson followed up with a narrow 9-8 (7-5) victory at #3 doubles over Katie Baasch and Karly Weber.
Catherine Gibbens provided the Marauders a big spark with a win at #1 singles. Calm and steady, the senior from Rapid City, SD, overcame a one-set deficit to pull out a 2-1 win (2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6)) over Shelby Benkofske.
Eileen Leong claimed the other Mary win in #5 singles. The junior defeated Macey Tellijohn in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
The match came down to second singles. In a hard-fought match, Megan Anderson slipped past Holt 6-4, 6-2.
Mary remains in Virginia, MN, to face St. Cloud State University on Sunday, Feb. 12. The Northern Sun match is set for 9 am at the Quad Cities Tennis Club.
