Marauders drop conference opener to Beavers

MINOT, ND – Opening their Northern Sun conference schedule against one of the hottest teams in the region, the University of Mary men's basketball team suffered a 91-61 loss at Minot State University. Led in scoring by Keith Hunter for the second straight game, the Marauders had three players in double figures.

Hunter scored 13 points for the Marauders, making 6-of-11 shots from the floor. Limited to just seven shots from the floor, Trevor Zacher made all five of his free throws and scored 12 points.

Coming off a 14-point performance in a win at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Wyatt Carr chipped in 10 points off the bench. He was 3-for-5 behind the arc, including treys on back-to-back Marauders possessions early in the second half during a key UMary run.

As the power failed on the scorer's table and shut down the scoreboard and game and shot clock for part of the first half, the Marauders suffered a similar fate. The Beavers used runs of 13-2 and 12-2 to build an 18-point advantage and entered intermission leading 26-42 at intermission.

The Marauders found their spark early in the second half. Down 18 behind a pair of early Tyler Rudolph baskets, the Marauders went on a 10-0 run. Trevor Zacher scored the first five points for UMary and Jaylan White the next five as both converted 3-point plays. After a Luis Ricci Maia hit a layup to rebuild a double-digit lead for MSU, freshman Wyatt Carr hit consecutive treys to pull UMary within 48-44. The back-to-back Carr 3-pointers capped a 16-2 run for UMary.

The response by the regionally-ranked Beavers was overwhelming as Minot State went on a 23-4 run to build an insurmountable 71-48 advantage.

Rudolph led all players with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Russ Davis had 15 points and Ricci Maia added 14 points and five assists.

The Marauders (1-3 overall, 0-1 NSIC) shot 38.9 percent from the field and was 6-of-19 on trey attempts. The Beavers (7-0, 1-0) converted 56.3 percent of their shots, including 10-of-17 behind the arc, and held a 39-24 edge in rebounds.

UMary starts a three-game home stand against Yellowstone Christian College on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 in non-conference play. The Marauders return to NSIC action when MSU Moorhead and Northern State University visit the McDowell Activity Center on Dec. 1-2.
