Marauders Fall to No. 8 Augustana in Three Sets

SIOUX FALLS, SD - No. 8 Augustana finished with a .317 attacking percentage and handed the University of Mary its third straight loss after defeating the Marauders 3-0 Friday, Sept. 30.

 

Senior outside hitter Thayna Silva led the Marauders (7-8, 2-4 NSIC) with 11 kills in the Northern Sun match as teammates Alex Brown and Elise Baumann finished with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

 

Rachel Astrup collected eight kills and Anna Neitfeld tagged on six kills for the visiting team. Senior setter Janell Finkbeiner finished with 31 assists for the Marauders.

 

The Vikings (13-1, 6-0 NSIC) took a 11-5 lead in the first set and continued its lead to 19-13 after an Anna Sykora kill but the Marauders used a Silva kill to make a late comeback. Trailing 21-17 the Marauders were unable to get any closer to the Vikings as the home team won the first set, 25-19.

 

After a Nietfeld kill, Mary trailed 19-15 late in the second set but Augustana scored the next four points to pull ahead 23-15 and received two kills from Bailey Koch and Courtney Place to take the 25-18 set win.

 

The Marauders weren't done fighting the Top-10 team in the country just yet as the blue and orange jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the third set. Mary led 11-8 in the middle of the set but the Vikings rattled off three straight points to tie the set at 11-11.

 

The set was in favor of the Marauders 12-11 but the home team scored the next nine points to take the late 20-12 and held on for the 25-19 win.

 

The Vikings extended its winning streak to six matches and were led by Place who finished with 12 kills.


Up next for the Marauders is Wayne State at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.
