ORLANDO, Fla. - A strong showing from their number two singles performer wasn't enough to spur on the University of Mary Women's Tennis team this afternoon as they took on Augustana College (IL) on the second day of their Florida trip.
 
The Marauders (2-7) got a furious comeback from Catherine Gibbens, but her effort alone couldn't stem the tide as the Vikings (14-3) took the match at a 7-2 clip.
 
Gibbens took on Dana Goggin in the singles matchup and the Viking appeared to have the easy win in the bag with a 6-1 win in the first set, but Gibbens refused to back down and maintained her composure in the second set as she knotted the set score at one each after winning the tiebreaker at 7-5.
 
Gibbens carried her momentum into the super tiebreaker and completed the comeback with a 10-8 win, clinching her first victory of U-Mary's Florida trip.
 
The number one singles spot fought hard as well with Sarah Janes and Meredith Holt teaming up for the winning effort against Caitlyn Schaffer and Madeline Lombardi as the Marauder duo clinched the first doubles win with an 8-7 victory against the Viking pair.
 
Unfortunately, that would be the only two wins of the match for U-Mary as the Viking clinched wins at the two and three doubles spots, while Janes dropped a closely contested matchup against Lauren Goggin at the number one singles spot as Goggin took the 6-4, 6-5 decision.
 
Eileen Leong and Shanna Steveson put up a tough fight at the number five and six singles spots despite the losses, with Leong dropping a 6-1, 6-4 game to Schaffer while Stevenson fell before Vicki Andonova at a 6-4, 6-2 clip.
 
The Marauders have halfway through their trip to the sunshine state as they will face Otterbein University tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM EDT.
