FARGO, N.D. - Serving up as the non-conference finale of the regular season, the University of Mary Women's Tennis team paid a visit to Courts Plus this morning to take on Concordia College (Minn.).
Â
The Marauders (4-8) had strong outings from top to bottom for the 9-0 sweep over the Cobbers (0-11) as U-Mary recorded their fifth shutout while under the direction of head coach
Vida Saliendra since she first took over the program back in 2012-13.
Â
The doubles competition stepped onto the courts first for both teams as
Catherine Gibbens and
Eileen Leong got the bill at the number one spot and started off the match strong for the Marauders with an 8-1 victory over Brittany Glatt and Jade Haseltine.
Â
The closest doubles match came at the number two matchup between
Anastasia Bruss and
Monica Benda for U-Mary, up against Kendra Stoick and Lisa Neumann, but the Marauder duo held on for another solid performance with an 8-4 win over the Cobber pair.
Â
Meredith Holt and
Shanna Stevenson rounded out the doubles teams as they took on Susan Zniewski and Breann Adamek at the number three spot and the Marauder twosome turned in the complete performance as they held the Cobber duo scoreless for an 8-0 win for the doubles sweep.
Â
Carrying their momentum into the singles competition, Gibbens took over the number one spot and cruised to a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Glatt, while Holt followed up with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stoick at the number two spot for a strong one-two punch at the top spots.
Â
Bruss followed suit at the number three spot as she defeated Haseltine at a 6-1, 6-2 clip, while Leong had the toughest singles matchup of the day at the number four spot as she took the first set at 6-1 over Neumann, but dropped the second set at 6-3, forcing a super tiebreaker. Enduring the onslaught, Leong came through in the end as she took the fourth singles win for U-Mary after a 10-6 score in the tiebreaker set.
Â
Stevenson took over at the number five spot against Zniewski as she took home the 6-2, 6-3 win, and
Cristina Bremar saw her first action of the year as she took on Adamek at the number six spot and completed the team sweep after a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Cobber.
Â
The Marauders will have a three-week break in front of them as they resume their NSIC schedule with home matches against Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston on Sunday, April 3, starting at 9 AM.
