FARGO, N.D. - Serving up the start of the 2016 season on the road, the University of Mary Women's Tennis team paid a visit out east to take on Minnesota State University Moorhead this afternoon for the first step back to the conference tournament.
 
The Marauders (0-1, 0-1 NSIC) had several hard-fought points throughout the match, but couldn't find the winning combination as the Dragons (2-0, 1-0 NSIC) took the sweep at 9-0.
 
Two of the doubles matchups finished at 8-2 favoring the Dragons as the duos of Sarah Janes and Meredith Hold, along with Anastasia Bruss and Monica Benda, couldn't catch a lucky break as the numbers one and three doubles teams, respectively. Catherine Gibbens and Eileen Leong teamed up for a close loss in extra points at 9-7 against Jessamey Jones and Ashley Wood at the number two matchup, but U-Mary had a deep hole to dig out of at 3-0 in the early goings.
 
Janes provided a constant back-and-forth against Jones at the number one singles matchup, but the Dragon proved the victor at 6-4 and 6-4 in the two sets. Gibbens took on Jade Goodyear at the number two matchup, with Goodyear eventually claiming victory despite the first set going into extra points at 7-6 in her favor as Gibbens fought tooth and nail for every last point. Unfortunately, Goodyear took the match after a 6-4 score in the second set in another extended battle against Gibbens.
 
Leong had the last close matchup of the afternoon at the number five singles spot against Wood and the Dragon outlasted the Marauder at 6-3 scores in consecutive set, paving the way for a 9-0 team score.
 
The Marauders will have their first homestand next week as they take on the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, February 13, starting at 1:00 PM at the Capital Racquet and Fitness Center, before hosting St. Cloud State University on Sunday, February 14, starting at 9:00 AM.
