FARGO, N.D. - Getting a solid performance out of both upper and underclassmen alike, the University of Mary Women's Tennis team took on Southwest Minnesota State University this afternoon to get a head start on their spring break.
Â
The Marauders (2-4, 2-4 NSIC) got a solid team performance in the doubles matchups for the eventual sweep, and had strong showings from every singles matchup en route to the 7-2 team win over the Mustangs (0-7, 0-6 NSIC).
Â
Sarah Janes and
Meredith Holt got the ball rolling against the stringent duo of Gabby Tellijohn and Crystal Overbaugh, and after a brief hiccup early in the set that found the Marauder pair trailing, Janes and Holt found a rhythm that carried them to an 8-3 win to get U-Mary on the board in the team score with the first doubles win against a quality opponent.
Â
Eileen Leong and
Catherine Gibbens went at the number two spot against Ashley Hoehne and Britney Thompson, and the Marauder twosome provided a consistent showing after having worked together through most of the early portion of the season to turn in a dominant 8-1 win over the Mustang pair for the second doubles win of the day.
Â
Anastasia Bruss and
Monica Benda were the third doubles team to go for the Marauders, and they too proved to be dynamite against their opponents Madyson Brinkman and Mariya Krumm as the junior/freshman combo found the right combination for an 8-3 victory, earning the doubles sweep for U-Mary.
Â
Carrying their momentum into the singles matchups, Janes got the bill at the number one spot against Tellijohn and continued to demonstrate her top spot dominance with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Mustang to inch U-Mary closer to the team win at 4-0.
Â
Gibbens turned in another supreme outing at the number two singles spot with a decisive showing against Overbaugh as the Marauder continues to improve over the regular season with a 6-1, 6-0 win over the Mustang. Gibbens finished strong against a tough opponent as she remained poised throughout the entire match to seal in the team win for U-Mary at 5-0.
Â
Holt went next at the number three spot against Krumm as the Marauder earned her first singles win of the year with yet another solid performance at 6-0, 6-0 in the quickest match of the afternoon, moving the team score to 6-0.
Â
In contrast to the number three singles matchup, Bruss took on Hoehne at the number four singles spot in the longest match of the afternoon as the two battled back-and-forth with long points in sets highlighted by multiple deuces. Hoehne would take the first set in the slugfest at 7-5 and eventually worn down her opponent in the second set at 6-3 to get Southwest Minnesota State on the board at 6-1.
Â
Leong went next at the number five singles spot against Jenna Gannott, and the Marauder turned on the jets after lagging in the start to rally off nine straight points to clinch the first set at 6-3 and carried the momentum into the second set to cruise to the 6-0 win to finalize U-Mary's team points at 7-1.
Â
Shanna Stevenson earned the start at the number six spot against Thompson and lost the first set at 6-1 as she adjusted to her first start of the season. Stevenson battled back in the second set to force a tiebreaker, but couldn't find the winning combination as the Mustang clinched the win at 7-6 (7-3).
Â
The good medicine should hopefully carry over into tomorrow's match at 9 AM against Minnesota State University as the Mavericks took the lone match in the 2015 season at a 6-3 clip.
