MANKATO, Minn. – By once again breaking his own school record,
Chris Jessop topped the University of Mary efforts at the opening day of the 2016 Northern Sun men's indoor track & field championships.
The Marauders stand eighth after day one with 18.2 points. Six competitors advanced from the preliminaries of the NSIC championships to the finals on Saturday.
A senior from Corvallis, Mont., Jessop clipped through the 3,000 meter run in 8:34.44 seconds to place third in the event and earn All-NSIC honors. He broke his old record by 2.81 seconds.
The Marauders also picked up five team points after placing fourth in the Distance Medley Relay. The U-Mary quartet of
Steven Gordon (Pierre, South Dakota),
Adam Cebulla (Kalisell, Mont.),
Teegan Olson (Minot, North Dakota) and
Derek Myers (Gillette, Wyoming) covered the distance in 10:25.55.
Dustin Rueb, a senior from Beulah, North Dakota, finished tied for sixth in the high jump. He cleared the bar at 1.98 meters for his best effort of the day.
In the pole vault,
Jensen Roseboom (Turah, Utah) took sixth overall when he cleared 4.45 meters.
The Marauders also landed the sixth best effort of the day in the men's long jump. Freshman
Luxon Glor (Winnipeg, Manitoba) registered his best effort of the season with a leap of 6.92 meters.
Senior
Nathan Inkman (Oroville, Calf,(advanced to the finals of the 800 meter run. He placed fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:58.18. In the 1,000 meter run, Myers took seventh in the preliminaries with a clocking of 2:37.67 to earn a slot in the finals.
Gordon claimed a slot in the mile run finals after recording a time of 4:27.36, sixth in the preliminaries.
Cory Berner grabbed the eighth and final slot in the 200 meter dash finals. The sophomore from Las Vegas, Nevada, was clocked in 22.54 seconds in the preliminaries to advance.
Gabriel Wyllie snared the final slot in the finals in the 600 meter run after placing eighth in 1:24.96.
