THIS WEEK: The University of Mary Wrestling team will wrap up their regular season as they host Northern State University for Senior Night at the McDowell Activity Center on Thursday, February 18, starting at 7 PM, before visiting Minnesota State University Moorhead on Sunday, February 21, for a makeup dual starting at 2 PM.
HISTORY: U-Mary hosted Northern State in the Marauder Duals earlier in the season and the Wolves had a pair of last-second bout wins to steal the dual away from the Marauders. Holding onto a 21-20 lead going into the 197-pound matchup,
Jacob Green took on David Murphy with the Marauder owning an 11-5 lead late in the bout. Murphy caught Green out of position on bottom and eventually pinned the Marauder with 16 seconds left in the third period to claim the win and swing the momentum in favor of the Wolves. U-Mary last faced MSU Moorhead in the previous season for Senior Night and the Dragons had several close decisions go in their favor as U-Mary had two bouts lost by less than four points and the Dragons took an injury default from
John DeVito at 184 pounds. MSU Moorhead would claim the dual win at 36-7 as
Tom DeVito and
Travis Smith were the lone Marauders to take a win in the evening.
LAST WEEK: The Marauders were set to host a triangular with St. John's University and Dickinson State University, but the Blue Hawks bowed out and left the day as a lone dual between U-Mary and St. John's. The Marauders took the dual at 22-15 as
Jakob Weisbrod spearheaded U-Mary's efforts with a brilliant 18-second pin of Branden Schorr at 149 pounds.
Rudy Guillen made his return to the mat with a dominant showing over No. 8 Ben Henle at 141 pounds with a 13-5 major decision, while
Dane Fischer,
Paul Michaelson,
Riley Nagel, and
Travis Smith all took decisions at their bouts. John Jensen had a 12-5 lead over John Wells before the Johnnie caught Jensen out of position and pinned the Marauder with less than a second remaining on the clock in the third period.
Tate Barnhardt,
Jacob Green, and
Jonathan Pelach all dropped decisions in their matchups with Barnhardt and Green losing by less than two points, while Pelach lost by 9-3 decision.
BARNCAT TOUGH: Jakob Weisbrod took home U-Mary's Barncat Tough Wrestler of the Week Award after his showing against Schorr at 149 pounds. Schorr went for an immediate takedown attempt in the opening seconds of the bout and Weisbrod put an stop to the Johnnie and quickly snuck in the spladle attempt before pinning Schorr to the mat at 18 seconds in.
NEXT WEEK: U-Mary will travle to Sioux Falls, S.D., to compete in the NCAA Super Regional 3 hosted by Augustana University. The Super Regional Tournament will take place at the Elmen Center starting at 10 AM on February 27 and will wrap up on the following day.
